Re: Firefox newtab advertising

Ah yes - I see what you mean, it doesn't seem possible to get to the page layout you want simply, but it may be a combination of settings Don't know if it would be possible to output about:config to a file - then compare with Xxdiff? Given it works in latest FF, can you get a on old version of FF 60...

I use FF ESR 60.8.0 These are the non-default newtabpage settings from my config - the result is a plain page with address and search box. app.normandy.startupRolloutPrefs.browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.improvesearch.topSiteSearchShortcuts;true browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.section.hi...

MX and Solyd are two very different beasts.

Look at the range of issues raised on their forum and then compare with this one.

No contest.

Re: LibreOffice as default office package in SolydX

I have to interact with MS Office users with some quite complex table layouts created in Word. Libreoffice spits the dummy and leaves a nasty mess on the screen. Softmaker just opens it, does what's needed and saves it - in either .doc or .docx format (paid version) Conversely I find the drawing too...

Re: several icons in panel won't fit/are cut off

The size of items in the notification area can be adjusted.

Menu>Settings>Panel>Items>Notification Area

Click the Properties Icon towards the bottom of the list on the right.

You'll see a Max Height value that can be scrolled to adjust for better fit.

Re: MX-Linux success: why?

It transpires that with MX you can upgrade/install a new version even if your /home is under / rather than a separate partition. This presumably happens by simply deleting/updating everything else rather than reformatting the drive which is the norm for new installs. Obviously you've got to tick the...

Re: Repo change requires acceptance

In my experience, running sudo apt-get --allow-releaseinfo-change update fixes this as well, without the need to comment/uncomment anything. You should only need to run it this way once. After that, things are back to normal (at least here they are). The reference to the manpage is a perfect exampl...

Waterfox scrollbar - where is it defined

scrollbar firefox waterfox.png Solydx 10 with Firefox ESR and Waterfox. I'm puzzled as to why Waterfox has its own scrollbar rather than following other settings. The attached pic shows FF on left and WF on right. In Solydx 9 both were the same - per FF so this came as a puzzle. I use TraditionalOk...

Re: MX-Linux success: why?

I have used MX over the years. MX-18 is of course now on the cusp of stretch>buster change. It is actually very good in that they maintain a test repo which provides the latest and greatest that CAN be backported to stretch - so for example you can install GIMP 2.10 while Stretch is at 2.8. Most imp...

Re: Support for Solydx 9 after 10 goes live

It will get supported as much as possible with a very small team like ours. But, to solve your wine problems: Use playonlinux and choose whichever wine version you need. POL is a wrapper that allows you to create different prefixes with different wine versions. If you do gaming, lutris is better su...

Support for Solydx 9 after 10 goes live

There are a number of programs I run under Wine which just cannot/will not run under the latest versions. One option is to keep running Solydx 9 - possibly in a VM or dual boot. What will happen to support for 9 once 10 goes live? I know that Debian keep up basic support normally till the next one g...

Re: Firefox security update not showing for EE

Hmmm.... it does seem to me that Debian have adopted a somewhat non-coherent policy in that case. However, I've swapped over to Waterfox as suggested - despite the adverse comments on various sites about it being slow to fix that is obviously not the case this time. I always preferred Seamonkey so i...

Re: unwanted bold font in Firefox ESR

Using ESR 60.7 - I have my fonts set to use Noto Sans and I have the box that allows sites to use their own fonts UN-checked. My monitor runs at 102 dpi I see bold fonts on wikipedia so assume it's basic html bold - no matter what the zoom level. WRT the bold in Fastmail - no idea - but it sounds li...

Re: Firefox/waterfox and DoH - what default to choose?

the browser is not _and should not_ resolve the address by itself. what firefox did is forcing us to use cloudflare as the default resolver. it's annoying but it's not less secure by any means. Yes - you are right, what I as thinking was more in the lines of was if firefox forces resolution via clo...

Re: Firefox/waterfox and DoH - what default to choose?

DNS over HTTPS sounds like a good idea At a gut level I feel that transferring something as important as name resolution to a browser application is just wrong. What bothers me is just how resilient it is likely to be and also, given the recent certificate issue that borked FF extensions, is this go...
