Re: What is a good system to replace Windows 7 when support ends in 2020

I've never regretted dumping windows for SolydK. There is plenty of choice when it comes to software, I always find some program that will do what I want. The only downside at the moment is that Disney+ doesn't work  , but that affects all Linux systems. and is Disney's fault. (Hope it is fixed...

Re: Not Able To Start Netflix On Firefox

I have found Firefox to be pretty unreliable when it comes to running netflix. Sometimes an update will work and another won't. When it works it is slow. I can't get it to work at all on Waterfox! :( Unfortunately, the only browser that works every time for me is Google Chrome which I keep just for ...

No one is brave enough? :D
Thanks for the instructions.
Yes I am not brave! I last used an upgrade script years ago and have forgotten all about it.

Of course I could have said the request was to help newbies. But I'm being honest about having cold feet.....

I would like to try the upgrade script but, please, can we have a step by step how to run it?

I am new to this distribution so thanks for the input. :)
I use gramps for my genealogy. A very versatile program.
It is available in the Solyd repos.

Re: Firefox (non-ESR) update annoyance

....I'm using Waterfox as my daily browser-for-everything for about 6 months now and I like it. The waterfox developer is a nice guy and the community reflects that .... I'm using waterfox for almost everything. But I can't get it to run Netflix. If I could do that, I will happily dump firefox, whi...

Re: (SOLVED)Not sure if grub will work on reboot

@ mhwelsh I followed your guidelines and it worked. Grub is safely installed on sda. Thank you for your very clear instructions. @ Arjen I did as you suggested and checked fstab before following mhwelsh's instructions. My thanks to both of you. (I have saved these directions for future use!) My hear...

(SOLVED)Not sure if grub will work on reboot

To day there was a huge upgrade for solydK. As usual with messages about grub when upgrading, I went with the status quo. This time there were more messages than usual. And I couldn't make sense of them. the result being that I'm worried that if I reboot I will not get the grub menu at all. H...

Re: Firefox ESR - Loss of functionality after update

....I suspect this is something unique to my situation, since nobody seems to have reported upgrade problems (the upgrade happened two weeks ago I think). The functionality I lost was being able to edit the "edit preferences". All the first screen shows is a few bullet points and an odd box, but no...

Re: Thunderbird profile questions (and maybe Firefox as well)

Well none of Arjen suggestions worked. It used to work perfectly at one time. It has only become a problem for me as I have been receiving lots of email (about 50 a day) which required me to click on one or more links. But as this has now come to a halt I think can accept that I either have to manu...

Re: Thunderbird profile questions (and maybe Firefox as well)

the biggest issue being that when I click on a web link in an email it fails to open the web link in firefox but will open it in Goolge Chrome (I have checked that Firefoxs is the default browser). This "default to Chrome no matter what" has been bugging me. :x :x I've tried many things to stop it ...

Re: Hello from rural USA

Hello, SilverBear. I, too, remember you from my Mepis days.

I discovered SolydK after Mepis stopped being developed, and have never felt the need to use any other distro.

Welcome.

Re: I Like Firefoxfox esr but Worried ?

I'm sticking with ESR 52 as well.

Re: Widevine on chromium

I have the debian package installed - I kept it - and then just did the terminal commands, restarted chromium and it worked. What error message do you see - in terminal and from Netflix? I installed chromium from the Solyd repos, so I suppose I have the debian version as well. I got no error from c...

Re: Latest upgrade went wrong. Advice please.

The result above is what I got after doing the upgrade.

I have just asked for another upgrade and I get the 0 0 0 message.
So it looks like the system really is up to date. I shall reboot and see what happens....

Edit: Rebooted and all is well. :D

Latest upgrade went wrong. Advice please.

The latest upgrade went awry so I took ilu's advice (posted elsewhere) and did not reboot the machine until there was a fix. Today I ran apt update which told me that dpkg had stopped. I followed the instructions to fix this. Then I did apt update and apt upgrade. When everything was finished I had ...

Re: Most recent update failed

This accounts for why over 200MB downloaded in a few minutes. :o
I used the GUI "Discover" built in updater. It just gave the normal system is up-to-date notice.

I think I'll go back to command line updates.
As warned I will not reboot until the problem is addressed.

Kate loads on bootup

I've just put the latest SolydK 32 bit on my old machine.
Each time I start up kate loads with the following file ready to edit. "kmix.autostart.desktop"
Any one know why this happens, and how do I stop it?
On my 64bit there is just a quick notification that the script has run.
