Re: The future of SolydXK

I can't say what the differences will be between the products, but some have suggested that Clem's core business are the regular, Ubuntu based distributions, not LMDE. For us, there's only SolydXK. You cannot find LMDE on Mint's frontpage, and making LMDE Mint's core business was one of my suggesti...

Re: The new SolydXK - Q+A

I think the new strategy is a breath of fresh air, and I appreciate how the project is veering away from the high-maintenance semi-rolling Testing base and evolving toward more of a common sense and pragmatic approach. If the brand name is Solyd, then by golly, make it Solyd, and what better way tha...

Re: SOLVED - Help - UP 2014-15-07 left me with only CLI

Fargo's command followed by some kind of sudo apt-get install -f recommended in the terminal window restored the desktop. However, the kernel did not update anything but the Update Manager. Confirmed by uname -r , which showed Linux kernel version 3.14.1. Here is the output in inxi -f CPU: Dual core...

Re: SOLVED - Help - UP 2014-15-07 left me with only CLI

Thanks guys. I will try that when I get home from work. It's definitely worth half an hour to see if I can rescue the install. SolydX really works great in every respect; I just wish I had stuck to my original mission of installing the remote control. So easy to get sidetracked!

Re: SOLVED - Help - UP 2014-15-07 left me with only CLI

I turned my SolydX 64-bit system on just to install a new remote control and made the mistake of running the Update Manager. It upgraded itself to 3.8 and then downloaded a long list of packages and I let it install them as well. The update finished without any particular error messages, but afterwa...

Re: SolydXK steadily gaining in popularity ...

I was a bit puzzled that Netrunner chose Manjaro over the Debian model...I admit I don't really understand the appeal of Arch / Manjaro. How is it superior or in any way advantageous over Debian? I do make frequent use of the ArchLinux wiki, however. In my opinion, it is the authority on Linux. Jus...

Re: SolydXK steadily gaining in popularity ...

but in the end, although Netrunner / LM may be prettier, I just like the concept of install-once and keep on rollin' too much. I totally agree (rolling), besides the fact anything with Ubuntu under the hood makes me feel like I need a shower these days. Have you seen Ubuntu's (and by asso...

Re: SolydXK steadily gaining in popularity ...

Somebody needs to write a new review. Mine is still the latest and it's getting long in the tooth already. It covered the 201401 Update. So, there's room for a new reviewer. I predict that would bump SolydX/K up a good ways on the chart. I get some 250 hits/day on that link although most are very li...

a little note about hosts file, if you're using that source then you'll need aware that these lines on your original /etc/hosts is removed 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 <your hostname> # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts ::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback ff02::1 ip6-al...

Re: Optimizing Linux

I don't know how adblock work but /etc/hosts tweaks works in similar manner with ghostery plugin in our browser. you're not obligated to update the list frequently. if you want to automate the process you can try to create a cron script and run it on a monthly basis. I prefer to do it manually sinc...

Re: Optimizing Linux

my tweaks include: - moving /tmp to tmpfs - a sysctl.conf tweak - a rc.local script to set brightness at boot - a /etc/hosts custom files to block lots of stuff on internet - install tlp to manage power management, cpu govs, disk iosched, and lots more. I looked into the /etc/hosts custom files ide...

Re: Optimizing Linux

In theory, the same optimization technique in Windows applies to Linux - eliminating automatic startup of unnecessary services (e.g. Bluetooth if one does not use Bluetooth, or CUPS if one does not use a printer). Zerozero I believe was the one that recommended "Boot Up Manager", an application that...

Re: KDE idea and question

This was a worthwhile thread to read. I will have to look into using Apper for my SolydX rigs. Apper is undergoing active development (last update May 5th 2014).

Good idea, but who's going to build that for me? Now that you mention it, I'd like a more professional looking site. The same functionalities, but without the Wordpress troubles. Perhaps a team to build, and maintain our site, and coming sites, the forum, and better integrate with social media, hel...

Re: Unable to access solydxk.nl

Please, send me a PM with your IP address. You can follow this link from your SolydXK machine (not the one that is already working), to get your IP address: https://www.whatismyip.com Do NOT post your IP address here! For a "big-time" web site like yours, you may want to divert blocked IPs to a con...

Re: Updates - strange behaviour

yes, it's safe to update; if you did the initial big update with UM this "issue" should have been solved automagically then. however i see, also, that you have an additional package missing (xterm) that is a dep. of steam (xterm is installed by default in SolydXK) maybe this was the reason why it d...

Re: Problem with VLC after update

Just a quick update: Fixed it now! Video output was set to Automatic, changed it to X11 and now it works... Richie I was going to suggest giving SMPlayer a try, as it seems to handle high-def a lot better than VLC in my experience. After comparing the performance of the two players, I switched to S...

Re: UP and BE/BO 2014.04.15

Thanks for a great distro. It is a lot less work then Upgrading Kubuntu and then re-installing media and all own stuff. Yeah, that's my thought as well. Upgrading two computers took me about three hours off and on, probably because of my unwise idiosyncracies in configuration, but in the end, I got...

Re: UP and BE/BO 2014.04.15

In the three months since the last UP, Debian Testing moved forward on a lot of packages. Our testing during the last months of 2013 demonstrated that many packages were updated with each of the monthly UP. It was not uncommon for a monthly SolydX UP to be between 400MB and 500MB. So, looked at tha...
