Re: HD replaced, long delay in boot? [closed]

Remember I wrote "...and not break the good that I have"? Somehow I did break things: /var/lib/dpkg is gone altogether, I have no way to update / install new. Yet another subject I'll need help on - please stand by while I do some research! edit: Something along the way went seriously wrong without ...

Re: HD replaced, long delay in boot?

Thank you for your help in the analysis and explanation, master kurotsugi - very much appreciated! An I/O bottleneck would not surprise me. Indeed this system is old - it dates back to August 2008 when I put it together. (The components I selected for low power consumption, in it's original config i...

Re: HD replaced, long delay in boot?

Thank you for you evaluation - very much appreciated! Maybe you are right and I shouldn't bother (I do not complain, don't want it to look like I am complaining anyway). The thing is, when spoiled with fast boot times, any delay where "nothing seems to happen" for even a short period of some seconds...

HD replaced, long delay in boot? [CLOSED]

Hi all, Recently I performed a fresh install: / on SSD, swap and /home on traditional harddrive (640 GB SATA, 7200 rpm). Swap and /home were to move to a 2 TB drive, but first I had to move stuff out of the way to free this drive. Three old harddrives of various sizes in between, while waiting durin...

Re: owncloud client and keyring popup?

Thank you, ilu for our extended explanation. SolydXK forums was my first stop. Although I did not (my bad!) read all / full threads related, I figured what I read sufficed to check with the community that I was facing the same issue here. Apparently I do, my password to the default keyring is not sy...

owncloud client and keyring popup? [SOLVED]

Hi all, There's some nagging pop-up that I would like to get rid off - can someone please shed some light here? Only a couple of weeks ago I performed a fresh install of SolydX 2019.02 (/ on SSD, swap and /home on an oldskool harddisk). As I am the only user, I have selected to auto-login the user s...

Re: Fingerprint auth anyone?

Well ... I stand corrected. Once more, obviously I'm hard at learning  Thank you, @ilu and @kurotsugi! Half asleep back then, I cannot quite recall but I followed what's on "packages are available at ..." . The PPA specifies this "eoan" version name, which I did not immediately recognize but "...

Fingerprint auth anyone? [SOLVED]

Hi all, Switching from an old SolydK to SolydX 9 64-bit (I better like the simple XFCE interface) on my laptop, I stumble upon not being able to use the fingerprint reader like I used to. No support out-of-the-box, although I cannot recall if I had to make any hard modification under KDE. IIRC (it's...

Re: Dell Latitude D820 & SolydX 9 - no go?!

... we should at least be able to find out what's going wrong. ... That's what I thought too - and terribly, terribly thick-headed me overlooked the very first possibility: a somehow malformed iso image. I did perform a hash check on the downloaded iso, but did not check the copy that USB Creator w...

Dell Latitude D820 & SolydX 9 - no go?! [SOLVED]

Hi everyone, Someone around who knows if SolydX 9 should be able to install on a Dell Latitude D820 or a D830? Version 8 in 32-bit as well as in 64-bit installs nicely using both traditional HD and SSD, but I cannot get version 9 to install on either laptop. From a USB pendrive (single image or Mult...

Re: FF periodically stalling?! [SOLVED]

For example: https://s5.postimg.org/41t0tzs7r/Screenshot_-_05032017_-_07_20_37_PM.png Here you see the default SolydX desktop graphics covered by a "semi-transparent" FF (SolydXK forum, me posting a reply hence the Smilies), and the top-most window is File Manager (not transparent because the active...

Re: FF periodically stalling?! [SOLVED]

@ilu: yes, https://wetransfer.com - every 3-5 seconds the background graphic refreshes or is replaced with something new. I did notice however that of lately the SolydX default theme "changed behaviour": windows that are not active have become semi-transparent(*). Or have I been missing something ob...

Re: FF periodically stalling?! [SOLVED]

Just to let you know how things evolved here lately: no significant changes to the system, just the regular updates. However yesterday I noticed that an open WeTransfer tab (FF window max'ed to 1680x1050, with a window open waiting for files to add) caused a sharp drop in system responsiveness for 1...

Re: FF periodically stalling?!

Thank you, ilu. Yeah, I figured so... about time to upgrade, even for what I thought a lightweight platform that is SolydX. Just looked it up, my homebuilt system (MSI K9A2GM-FIH, AMD Ahtlon 64 X2 5200+) is close to nine (9) years old already. For the last year (or 2?) I notice glitches and brief st...

FF periodically stalling?! [SOLVED]

Hey guys, Could anyone shed light on this or give me pointers where I (sh/c)ould have a look? Lately my SolydX installation sort-of hangs every 10-15 seconds while FireFox is my main window: the system becomes unresponsive for some 1-2 seconds, then continues as normal for another 10-15 seconds, and...

Re: Post-install mods [RESOLVED]

In Xfce, when trying to re-size a window with the mouse pointer in a corner of the window, use the <Alt> button and right mouse button . This causes the mouse pointer to change and will allow for the easy re-sizing of the window. ... Thank you very, very kindly - that's really an eye opener for me!...

Re: Post-install mods [SOLVED]

Of course there is another way: ... I just thought you wanted something to click. Yeah, right, thanks, rub it in... The problem is, as time flies by and Linux advances, I hate to admit I lag behind to mouse-only level of knowledge. Like an aeroplane loosing engine power, therefor airspeed - and fin...
