Re: Automatic Updates

Based on what the OP posted, I don't think Linux is the answer for the end user(s). They don't seem like the type of people who want to understand apt, aptitude, command line, etc. That's why I suggested a Mac. A cron job might work, but what happens when things don't work right. Would the end user...

Re: Trouble playing Audio CDs

Guayadeque and Clementine are nice audio players/music library managers. I believe both will play CDs as well. Both also allow you to add radio stations for streaming music sites. Clementine even has a pre-built list of sites, one of which is really good...Digitally Imported. Clementine comes with ...

Re: Trouble playing Audio CDs

Ruby Ripper is pretty good but takes a little patience to set it up. It's in the repository as well. As far as the cd support of Exaile, i'm not much help. Most of my music is ripped to my hard drive and I use Pithos for Pandora allot.

Re: [ask] crunchbang

I'm thinking about installing Crunchbang because of Fglrx not supporting testing very well. Radeon driver does work but not as well for 3d acceleration in my opinion.

Re: Browse faster by keeping your browser profile in tmpfs (

I normally use the back-port option to build sources from PPA instead of installing packages from PPA's. I believe that is safer but someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Re: Automatic Updates

Yeah, I know but I was trying to provide a alternative working solution. So if it's the apt-get dist-upgrade, he could make a cron job with apt-get dist-upgrade.

Re: Automatic Updates

I thought it all was done automatically through apt. The update-managers backend is apt so I don't understand why this would be a problem. Is there some scripting done through the update manager not available via apt?

Re: Automatic Updates

I don't think the update manager supports this but you can do it another way.
http://www.debianadmin.com/automatic-up ... n-apt.html

This should be equivalent since the updates pushed to Production are the same whether using Update Manager or apt.

Re: Firefox/Thunderbird language problem still unsolved

I recommend using different profiles on Windows and Linux and use Xmarks or the built in Firefox sync to keep your bookmarks synced.

Re: Volume Hotkeys Commands

I finally found the verdict. Xfce-mixer is not working correctly with my system. I have to manually select the proper controls and then use a alternative volume applet. If anyone else has this issue, install volumeicon and remove the default mixer from your panel.

Re: Updatemanager and proxy

Same problem here; apt is configured to use proxy and works well, as apt-get works without problem. Still, updatemanager shows same symptoms as described above. -- avery Sounds like a bug in the actual Update Manager with the way it utilizes apt then. Maybe Schoelje, or Zerozero can be more of assi...

Re: Metapackage Installer

I've been using SolydX for 3 months and I love this distro. I also still distrohop via VB and finally checked out AntiX/MX-14, which shows promise and which I'd like better if it were a rolling release. One thing I really like is its metapackage-installer, which is similar to Arch's AUR/yaourt. For...
