Re: Best way to recover data if the network fails?

All PC's on my LAN are backing up to my server which has a 4-2TB Raid-5 external eSata drive enclosure. This also serves as my LAN file server using NFS and Samba, running Xubuntu 16.04. Nix PC's use backintime if they have a GUI DE. Headless machines use rdiff-backup. Server is running CrashPlan fo...

Re: So what's your take on Manjaro?

Sad to say that I have switched away from Debian/Ubuntu based distro's for all my workstations. I've been running Manjaro XFCE since October 2013 without a single issue. I like the fact if you stick to the stable repo's that most issues are vetted before being released for upgrade. [kevin@kww-tech ~...

Re: Simple Samba Server Configuration

Here is my global section that I've used for years for my home network. I've never had to do anything specific for Windows shares. [global] workgroup = home server string = garage log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m max log size = 1000 syslog = 0 panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d socket o...

Re: Samba hell

Are you sure you can ping your pc's by hostname? If not, this is a DNS issue. Also try using the IP's instead of hostname and report back.

Re: Sharing Files using NFS

Not sure why you would want each PC to be a server and a client?? I always use the link below when setting up NFS.

Re: I cannot watch dvd's

My Pc doesn't boot from usb. But I booted in Windows XP and I was able to record and erase a dvd on it using a software called Cdburnerxp. I was also able to play a dvd movie using Windows Media Palyer and on Jetaudio too. Only Powerdvd that instead of playing the dvd movie showed me a track list o...

Another test would be to boot from a USB stick, if possible, and try a movie from the live boot.

Ran into this same issue with LMDE. After the disk is inserted, it will mount just by starting Brasero.

I'm having this issue on Manjaro so it must not be distro specific.

Re: Cannot mount Windows share using fstab

Here is my fstab line that works, but like you, it will not automount because of the "only root can mount' error. If I open a term and issue 'sudo mount -a', it will mount with my credentials. //10.1.0.67/D$ /media/EHS-FS cifs credentials=/root/.smbcredentials,sec=ntlm,file_mode=0777,nocase,noperm,d...

Re: How to network 3 SolydK machines?

I use samba (see the tutorial). I also had to remember that if I ssh from 1 PC to the next, my router wants .local for the domain. -Hinto Samba has the advantage of already being installed in SolydXK, and may be simpler to use in some instances (don't know about KDE since I'm not a KDE user, but Xf...

Re: How to network 3 SolydK machines?

I would recomend using one of your machines as the "server" and using NFS instead of Samba since you are all Linux. The server can be any of your machines but you would most likely want to use the one with the most free hard drive space since it will be the central storage for your network. Here is ...

Re: Samsung USB android phone not recognized

I have the same issue with my Droid Razr Maxx. Used to work with the older ISO's. I'm assuming it's an issue with an update on Debian's end?? This is about to drive me to another distro as I need to sync my podcasts to my phone at least once a week. The only solution I have is to shut my phone off, ...

Re: ISO's 201308 - progress (or not)

which is correct and validates what i said above. in mint14 you don't have /etc/network/interfaces causing a race condition with n-m. i believe that you edit that file in mint 14 to make it look like the ubuntu server (or the one you have at the moment in solydX) you will see the same behaviour I c...
