Re: Otter Browser Dependency Issue

"let's stick on the topic. it's not about the OS nor the DE. firefox and chrome are indeed heavy, especially for older system. IMO it would be more relevant to discuss what's the lighter replacement for them. " In regard to that, which did spur the topic, I had lost sight of this recently til I had...

Re: Otter Browser Dependency Issue

Zill I am running a Toshiba Satellite M50 with Pentium M at 1.73ghz and 1540 MB memory. Since you have raised the subject, here is something I don't understand: In your comparison between stable and testing, would I expect to see a performance difference in anything much other than bootup speed? Wil...

Re: Otter Browser Dependency Issue

Thank you Frank! The daily build version did the trick! And I take full responsibility for anything that happens to me! ;-) I know Solydx is not oriented toward older computers, but I have it on an old Toshiba satellite that strains under the weight of Firefox and Chromium. And of course there's the...

Otter Browser Dependency Issue

I have been installing otter-browser on my various linux distributions on several older machines, and finding that it is less bloated and runs faster. http://otter-browser.org/ In Solydx 32 bit EE, however, I am running into Error: Dependency not satisfiable -qtbase-abi-5-3-2 I'd really like to run ...

Re: SAMBA Question

Ha! I DID return! ;-) And yep, I have been able to resolve my samba issues on this and other distributions by making sure my etc/hosts file did not contain hard-coded addresses (which I had attempted to add in an earlier effort to make it work). As long as my host file consists only of: 127.0.0.1 lo...

Re: Solydxk Constructor -- SYSTEMBACK!

Just posting here because I would like to get a notification if anyone gets Systemback playing nicely with SolydXK. I use Systemback a lot on my other linux installs and would really like to use it on my SolydXK box. The original poster is very correct that Systemback for making a LIVE ISO back up i...

Re: Another Remaster Question

Jay said: "3.set up the the new computer like above (but make sure the /root atleast 10GB and /home atleast 20GB) and any other partitions wanted in a exdended partion and finally a appropaite sized swap partion at the end. I'venever found anyones PC with...

Re: Alternatives for Skype

Thank you VERY much for posting this! I need Skype and that has been a significant problem for me, not to be able to get it to work in SolydX. I haven't connected a call yet but things are looking good so thanks very much for posting this!!! (Now if you could just point me in the right direction to ...

Re: Another Remaster Question

Thanks J. Jay. I spent some time with FSarchiver this weekend and like it, but I am also a big fan of Redo backup, and i think that will remain my main workhorse unless/until a live cd remastering alternative becomes available. I have used Redo to restore full systems and/or swap larger hard drives ...

Re: Chrome Remote Desktop in Solydx 64

This appears to have turned out to be a stupid question. It looks like my problems with chrome remote desktop, and chromecasting, will be solved by downloaded the chrome deb from google instead of the repository chromium.

Re: Another Remaster Question

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes the installable live CD is the way want to go, and Refracts sees t best pat, but for the issues I described in the original post. Fsarchiver may be an option though if I can figure a easy way to know how to fix the fstab, but unless there is an automated we to do that...

Another Remaster Question

I know this is not officially supported, but I am wondering if any other users have figured out a way to remaster Solydxk in the last several months. I have read the threads about the Constructor (Edit: which will not suit my needs), and how Remastering is not supported by the developers. I've playe...

Re: Important SolydXK news

Just because there has been so much praise for SolydK, let me say that SolydXXX is the one that introduced me to XFCE, so please don't consider dropping that thinking there is no interest in it! ;-)

Chrome Remote Desktop in Solydx 64

Has anyone gotten Chrome Remote Desktop to work to allow access to a Solydx computer from a remote location? In Chromium I can install the app (apparently) but I keep getting an error message that I cannot proceed because the app has not been installed, even thought I have repeatedly downloaded and ...

Re: ISO testing 201410

Strike what i said below -- just checked the dowloaded ISO again, and the mdsum was fine. And i can add to the list of things to report that the updatemanager did not autostart either. Of course all these things could be something I did wrong - just reporting FWIW - probably nothing ;-) No, I didn't...

Re: ISO testing 201410

FWIW - I downloaded and installed the current 2014-10 version today onto a brand new machine with no linux previously installed. I have run into a couple of minor issues: 1 - The user that I set up during the install refused to allow me to log in on first boot. I went around it an logged in as root,...

Re: Neither Sysinfo nor Hardinfo show STORAGE info

Thank you for the note of solidarity Frank!!! ;-)

This kind of thing worries me because I tend to think if I am missing some kind of file or setting now, where else will it crop up and hit me??! ;-)

At least I know I am not alone! ;-)

Re: Neither Sysinfo nor Hardinfo show STORAGE info

Thanks again for your reply. Yes, that is exactly what I am talking about. While yours reports information, all of my four Solydx 64 machines are completely blank. No worries and I guess I should not even bother to talk about this, but when I see something like this it just makes me worry that I hav...

Re: Neither Sysinfo nor Hardinfo show STORAGE info

Thank you for the reply and sorry for my confusion! Thanks for posting the screenshot. No, that's not what I mean -- on the file data, my system displays that too. At the very bottom of your screenshot, under the DEVICES section, you can barely make out the next entry - STORAGE --- That's the one I ...

Re: Neither Sysinfo nor Hardinfo show STORAGE info

Well thanks for the reply, I think, but I seem to be totally missing your point, or your posted your response to the wrong question.... Anyway, I am now checking this on my fourth Solydx installation, with same result. I have installed hardinfo and sysinfo from the software manager, run them both fr...
