Re: network okay no Internet

Thanks, that is one thing I did do, the ISP's DNS is pretty bad and that helps lots. I think in the end I have a network card starting to go.

Re: network okay no Internet

Sorry, kind of lost track of the problem. It happens occasionally, loosing Internet. Printer (wireless) worked. So since a reboot fixes, I ignore the problem. I can ping my router, I can print, can't ping google or any Internet site when bad. Ifconfig shows it was assigned an IP address, if it disco...

Re: network okay no Internet

Update: I am at the Library now and the Internet is fine. I noticed when it broke before I logged to a distant neighbor's open wifi and it connected (unusable because of distance/signal), then logged in at home it worked. Will find out in a few hours if this repeats. ---thanks for any ideas or sugge...

network okay no Internet

I am wondering if someone can give me a hint on fixing a new problem. I'm using SolydK, and the wireless network is as installed, "vanilla" settings. It was working until yesterday, after a few hours came back to the laptop (Dell 600) all looked fine, but none of the Internet programs (firefox / thu...

Re: Firefox Search Engines

That works well.
The address bar serves as a fast search using the default, so you can have 2 different ones with the search bar holding a 2nd choice. Pretty handy.

Crash and Burn abandoning the unsafe

My poor Mom, her Vista betrayed her. Despite having antivirus, anti malware, nothing could stop her Vista from becoming a harvesting tool for some virus. Credit card number and who knows what else stolen by rouge virus. When it gets done, it removes the user. I put on Solydxk KDE for her. She didn't...

Firefox Search Engines

I was not too happy with the search box not having any of the search engines I wanted, I don't stick with one depending on what I'm looking for. The drop down "manage search engines" brought me to a pretty much useless place. After a bit of frustration I found: http://mycroftproject.com/ which lets ...

Re: Greetings from Colorado

Just a quick final note, the install from ISO went perfect. The settings looked the same as what I had in LMDE, even Wobbly windows. I should have tried to investigate more to see why conversion failed. Now it works just fine as a fresh install.

I would definitely recommend this distro! Thanks!

Re: Greetings from Colorado

Well, something went terribly wrong. It changed video driver or mode ... I had KDM as display manager, Open GL comositing, and it or the Radeon 9000 driver changed in the conversion, NO usable video after the reboot, it looked like an old TV with the horizontal hold way off (diagonal lines) and the ...

Re: Greetings from Colorado

That is the computer, without the cover. I used the NorthStar OS with the 5 1/4" floppy and a Soroc terminal. Thanks for the advise, I'll try clonezilla. If anything it will be handy if (or when actually) I do wreck it. LOL I'll post results of the change when I do it. Mike--------------------------...

Re: Greetings from Colorado

Thank you. (everyone) Schoelge, I installed KDE from the MINT "software manager" using a package, I think called "KDE full install". So would hope it would go. I have read the tutorial, easy stuff, I am a bit nervous I'll break it after getting it all dialed in. I almost broke it installing CWP weat...

Greetings from Colorado

Interesting, found SolydXK after spending 2 days getting the laptop (Dell D600) to work on LMDE with KDE. It works perfect and has all the bells and whistles I want.... and now found this site and could have saved time. Super! I am retired, I did teach at the senior center, word processing and sprea...
