Personally I prefer lxtask because it gives memory in numbers (I'm using 870 MB of RAM right now) instead of percentages. I find the interface and output cleaner and easier to understand. I'm having problems trying to connect a (VIVO) 3G USB stick to get internet, too.
It will install whatever dependencies are required for NetworkManager, that are not already installed.

Confirmed: I installed NetworkManager, and removed wicd. Logged out, logged back in, and everything works just fine.

The best solution would be to replace “wicd” with “NetworkManager” in the Live media, which does have very good support for mobile broadband. I'm planning on replacing wicd with networkmanager, but haven't done so yet. I have done this with other distros in the past, so it should be a simple matter...
