Re: User name at login screen -- visible or not? SOLVED

No, I haven't changed /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf since Jan. 8th. That is why I called it strange to see two lines greeter-hide-users=false appended to it on Jan. 30. and so asked here whether apt or apt-get might have done it. However, I just looked at it again and saw, sam@solydk1:~$ ls -Fdltr /etc/...

Re: User name at login screen -- visible or not? SOLVED

Strange! After reappearance of user names at the login screen this morning, I looked at /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and saw two lines that said greeter-hide-users=false greeter-hide-users=false which I have since deleted from the file. The file's modification date/time was dated 1:23am this morning. I...

Stretch and Buster

Through Debian linux Stretch and Debian Linux buster I have stuck with Solydk Stable because I have a relaxed feeling of being at home with a long-time soulmate, a stable POSIX-compliant operating system with all the tens of thousands of free pre-compiled software packages Debian enthusiasts maintai...

Re: User name at login screen

I changed the variable in the file as you suggested, Bas. It worked after a system restart. Thank you, Bas.

Thank you, Arjen for reminding me to document what I changed in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and why.

Re: Resize a window

In "SolydK 10 64-bit", I noticed the mouse cursor disappears when you move the mouse over any of the viewport's four corners. On the other hand, when you move the mouse over the edge of the viewport away from the corners. , the mouse cursor changes to a double arrow perpendicular to the edge. Howeve...

Re: KDE failed after #apt-get install git-all --SOLVED

I reinstalled Solydxk from the SolydK 10 64-it Installer on the LiveDVD. I did not change any partitions with gparted. I did not enter root password. I did set the default username and password, using the same values as before. I made sure no LEDs on my keyboard were illuminated (e.g., Num Lock). My...

Re: KDE failed after #apt-get install git-all

Thank you for your ideas, ilu. I have certainly learned to type N at the APT prompt if I am ever uncertain and to only run # apt-get update && apt-get upgrade at bedtime. Why do you think synaptic might improve the quality of my life ? What will it do that APT won't ? What about dpkg ? I have kept u...

Re: KDE failed after #apt-get install git-all

Today I was able to log in to the hard drive as root with no input to GRUB. I waited until the Blue & white soldxk scre3n appeared, then disappeared, and logged in at the white-on-black prompt Solydk 10 64-bit soldk tty1 as root. Here is the output from #df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted...

KDE failed after #apt-get install git-all SOLVED

Last night, Dec 10th, I inadvertently mucked up KDE on Solydk 10 installation by installing #apt-get install git-all I got the idea from following https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Getting-Started-Installing-Git In hindsight, this was a dumb idea. I had already installed git. I didn't need any GUI stuf...

Re: KDE Failed in Solydxk 10 buster

Arjen, I followed your advice. After awhile, I figured out that in gparted you have to unmount/dismount the partition before you can Resize/Move it. If fact, the numerals in the text boxes brought up by the Resize/Move button are meaningless until you dismount the ptn. I restored 12GB freed space to...

Re: KDE Failed in Solydxk 10 buster

I modified my backup scripts but the rsync calls because of a double slash for the solydxk in the destination argument whether I wrote it into the BASH script as $USER or as solydxk. I could not figure out where the double slash was coming from. So I ran all my rsync calls one at a time from the BAS...

I don't recall user sam's user ID/group ID. Is 1000 the default for the first user's ID and first user's group ?
If yes, then they are the same.

Re: KDE Failed in Solydxk 10 buster

Okay, Arjen, I will decrease my /home partition by 10 GiB and then increase my / partition by the same amount, using gparted from the Live DVD. Thank you for pointing this out to me. First, before backing up my files, I have a question about ownership of my user files on the external USB3.1-connecte...
