Re: Theme sddm-theme-breeze killed my system

I can believe that Synaptic->File->History will show packages installed/uninstalled. But I cannot believe that the history will show all of the activity involved in installing/uninstalling. Maybe it does. But I don't intend to test it. I typically just reinstall Solydxk. I've gotten quite efficient ...

Re: Theme sddm-theme-breeze killed my system

Thank you Ilo. Let me summarize: 1. There is no sure fire way to identify a dangerous package. Just vague acronyms like sddm in the name of something as harmless sounding as a theme. 2. There are packages in Synaptic that will fail in mid-install. 3. The delivered Synaptic defaults may be useful, ye...

Theme sddm-theme-breeze killed my system

I was testing various themes in solydx. One theme, sddm-theme-breeze, is apparently a KDE theme that installed a large part of KDE into my solydx system and then quit halfway. I lost the error messages(something about held programs). I restarted synaptic and then deleted in two parts (breeze-icon-th...

Re: Firefox magically loses default status

Solved. Firefox 52 and 58 shared a profile and became entangled. The problem went away when I did a clean install, not using an existing profile.

Firefox magically loses default status SOLVED

Firefox ESR 52.6.0 / Thunderbird 52.6.0 Firefox->Edit->Preferences->General shows Firefox as default browser. Whisker->Settings->Preferred Applications->Web Browser = Mozilla Firefox. Thunderbird->Edit->Preferences->System Integration->checked Firefox Yet, quite often Firefox loses its status as def...

Thank you, Ilu. Synaptic showed no shared dependencies. Two entries and the plugin all went away.

Do I need IcedTea-Web? SOLVED

Of what use to me is IcedTea-Web? I am not a java developer.
And I cannot find any mention of its utility to a typical user.
Can I safely delete it?

Re: Something is mounting stuff to /media

Thank you both, Ila and Bas, very much. That is the explanation that I was looking for. And, Ilo, you are right about deleting what is mounted. Not long ago, I deleted a whole OS because I didn't understand what I was looking at (and I was very tired). Hence, my jumpiness about deleting. I did (do?)...

Re: Something is mounting stuff to /media

These should be just empty directories. Should be, but aren't always. I've seen whole partitions mounted there. I've either (as root) unmounted them or deleted them with no ill effects. But never before has my home name or root showed up, and I'm hesitant to delete either one. You can mount stuff t...

Something is mounting the name of my home dir to /media. Also /root is mounted to /media.
Why is this happening? And how do I undo it? They cannot be unmounted using sudo.

Albatross theme install failure

When attempting to install Albatross-gtk-theme 1.7.4-1 with Synaptic, I get this: E: /var/cache/apt/archives/albatross-gtk-theme_1.7.4-1_all.deb: unable to open '/usr/share/backgrounds/albatross-wall-source.svg.dpkg-new': No such file or directory I assume that this means that the 2nd package is req...

Re: Better don't use Grub Customizer

@Peter I no longer have an ubuntu stick, so I used the live usb stick for Solydx9. I had some problems, but I am really grateful that you encouraged me to try using a live installation usb. I had no idea that so much of the OS was available for use. I have likely done something incorrectly. But here...

Re: Better don't use Grub Customizer

OK. I've permanently tossed GC. But I still need some help. solydx9 does a neat job of finding all partitions with an os and creating a multiboot menu. Is there some standalone software that can be put on a usb that does just that, but without having to actually install a new solydx9? I often end up...

Re: Help for Grub Customizer glitches

I think that you are right, Peter. I should post "Solved" on this thread because of what I ended up doing. I deleted everything and started over with new partitions and new iso, except for my data partition and my dataBackup partition. I installed one only partition without any change from new excep...

undelete a Gparted deleted partition

I have carelessly deleted a solydx partition while within Gparted. The partition still appears in Gparted and lsblk . It's content seems to be OK. Yet it is no longer bootable. Does anyone know just what Gparted does when it is told to delete? It seems that something is done that could be easilly un...

Re: Help for Grub Customizer glitches

Who writes the scripts that Grub Customizer uses in each partition? I am still really puzzled that they are different, especially given that they were generated from the same Solydx iso. (I mentioned this in an earlier post that was never replied to) BTW, I really like GC. I could never have done wh...

Re: Help for Grub Customizer glitches

If it gives you trouble don't use it. It's possible to handle grub without the interface. In light of all your boot problems: just deinstall it and forget it.
Thank you Ilo. That was really helpful.
