Re: Lighten KDE
I renew the thermal paste on the CPU and on the GPU. Let see if it goes better in the next days. If done correctly - that is with as thin a layer of grease possible - I don't see how this can have anything but positive results. BTW and FWIW - when I do this (and I've never had anything but positive...

Re: SolydXK on Social Media
If one can believe what's written at these two URLs: CNN Tech: Facebook changes: How will my account be different? Mark Zukerberg's Facebook post I see this not so much as Facebook abusing it's users but a case of Facebook failing, in 2014 and earlier, of failing to control app developers and their...

Re: Lighten KDE
There are a couple or three things I would look at: First I would ensure that all vents and cooling solutions are free of dust. No matter how careful I am, I'm always amazed at how quickly vents get blocked. How about the thermal grease between your CPU and its cooling solution? And between the grap...

Re: Desktop not used for 1 year, forgets CMOS but not any more?
There is a battery in there that needs replaced. It is possible with you turning the power back on the battery is holding a charge for a little while before running out of charge. I know about the large(ish) backup battery. On my, and most other,. motherboards this is a CR2032. This was replaced. A...

Stretch update to 9.4 on 10MAR2018
I just read an interesting post this morning that Debian stretch will be updated to 9.4 on Saturday, 10MAR2018. An update to Debian 9 is scheduled for Saturday, March 10th, 2018. As of now it will include the following bug fixes. They can be found in "stretch-proposed-updates", which is carried by a...

Re: An interesting thing while installing WiFi card
Strangely enough, I did another (fresh) install on a different partition (same machine) with the WiFi card installed. I always run the installer from a CLI and I noticed that the SolydK installer installed the broadcom-sta-dkms package automagically. On a reboot after the install, the WiFi card just...

An interesting thing while installing WiFi card
Because of changes in my home, I needed to install and get working a WiFi card for my desktop computer. Did some research and discovered that this card, ASUS Wi-Fi PCI Express Adapter (PCE-AC56) was claimed to work in Linux, specifically Debian. Great, ordered it and installed it..... Long story-sho...

Re: Swap partition gone
If it's not too late, that is if you haven't already started the re-install .... Schoelje's instructions should have worked ... with one minor change; one needs to use the complete path to the fstab file because we can not assume that you have done a cd /etc to change the current working directory. ...

Re: Launching a program by start that needs «sudo» password
CAUTION! Always use visudo when editing sudoers. Never use a text editor. Can you explain me why ? And could the fact that when I first tried I did it using a text editor cause the unsuccess ? I second the question. I would have thought that using vi/vim as root in a terminal window would have gene...

Re: Linux Insider review of SolydK 201801
The author made one non-trivial mistake - SolydXK is no longer working to a rolling release model. This might cause some disappointment with some who read that review and then discover the news.
But, like you, I found the review to be pretty well balanced and accurate.

Re: darktable, backports repository,
And now you've got me wondering....
I'm going to have to attempt a compile of the latest version just to see if the process I have used in the past still works. This could be interesting.

Re: darktable, backports repository,
It appears (see this page) you are correct. They show 2.2.5 in backports.
Given that, I would compile from source. It's not hard and doesn't take too long a time. I think the last time I did it (about a year ago) it took about 5 minutes to compile to the .deb file.

Re: darktable, backports repository,
To install darktable 2.4.0 on SolydX 9 : add a repository «debian buster» URI : http://deb.debian.org/debian/ Distribution : buster Section(s) . non-free contrib main Then update, install darktable, and then *disable* the new repository. While this might work in the short-term, it's my understandin...

Re: Some clues about CPU vulnerabilities? Spectre and meltdown
After downloading the intel tool to detect this flaw ( intel_sa00086.py ), either 4.9.0-4 or 4.9.0-5 appears to be vulnerable, according this tool. Anybody knows the state of this patch with Debian/Solydxk kernels? Thanks in advance for your comments. I, also, downloaded the script and ran it again...
