Re: ia32-libs

If your software still insists on trying to install ia32-libs, despite it not being necessary, you can re-package to not require that dependency. I've had to re-package Google Earth to remove its (unneeded) dependency on ia32-libs. Here's how: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/debian-26/hpw-to...

Re: Devede and a common problem

You'll see many other posts asking about installing PPA's in Debian, and it's always met with the same response: may work, but not a good idea, as Ubuntu and Debian don't always play well together. You might try activating Debian Unstable in your repositories and pull in a more recent ffmpeg (if one...

Have you added any add-ons? They can be memory hogs. Remove them one at a time and see if it makes a difference.

Re: a couple of questions from a newbie

Probably Ubuntu One is the closest thing in Linux to what you're calling an external ID, as Ubuntu develops a cloud of its own that ties in with the desktop. But unless each distro of Linux starts developing its own cloud (and tying your whole OS to its external services, as in: try removing Gmail f...

Re: a couple of questions from a newbie

I think I get what you're trying to do: you'd like different users to be able to log in to the same computer (at different times, of course) using their Google IDs. If so, then you can just set up multiple users in SolydK, with their user name and password the same as when you log into a Google acco...

Re: a couple of questions from a newbie

Yes, welcome yoast. Chromebooks are cloud-based, so what you're logging into is your access to "your" data in the cloud, not your own computer. So it's apples and oranges, and wouldn't work on SoldydK. The benefit of Chromebooks is their portability. The benefit of not relying on the cloud is that y...

Re: Kdenlive won't install

I had this problem a few years ago, and can't remember exactly how I solved it, but see if this helps:

Oddly, Kdenlive installs fine on Solydx.

Re: Network-manager device not managed

My solution was: sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and change

[ifupdown]
managed=false

to

[ifupdown]
managed=true

It is illogical, isn't it? But that's brand recognition and a near monopoly at work. If toothpaste were free, people would still buy Crest.

Re: Make Exaile default for MP3

Yeah, that's a valid concern. That's why I suggested making a backup, because then you can individually restoring what used to be vlc.desktop, to see which ones effect your mp3 files.

Hope this helps.

Re: Make Exaile default for MP3

OK, let's try this: make a backup of .local/share/applications/mimeapps.list, then global replace all instances of vlc.desktop with exaile.desktop, then see if you haven't fixed the problem. There are so many different audio and video formats that you may not be changing all the appropriate ones. Be...

The other spot to edit is: gksudo nano /usr/share/applications/defaults.list.

In my experience, VLC should be looking for /dev/sr0. That's the numeral zero as the last digit.

Re: LibreOffice in SolydX

In the past I've done exactly what zerozero suggests above and there are no problems. In fact, if you don't remove Abiword, you'll need to change your default settings so that Libreoffice opens .doc (and other) files automatically.

Re: Trouble launching Thunderbird Email

Yes, it's odd, but I had a similar problem once with Thunderbird installing a Chinese language version which I could not read. Open Synaptic, uninstall thunderbird-locale-zh-cn (or whichever other thunderbird-locale is inadvertently installed), click apply, then once it's uninstalled, install thunde...

Re: Cinnamon Spin?

I'll let the founders of SolydXK speak for themselves, but my understanding is that this distro was started because LMDE discontinued support for KDE and XFCE, while it still supports Cinnamon and MATE. One can always install Cinnamon on SolydXK using a variety of methods of course, and I have it on...

Re: Thunderbird 24.0 not compatible with Lightening 2.6.1

So many versions, so much confusion. Yes, lightning 2.6.2 is compatible with TB 24.1.0, as per the Lightning/Mozilla blog: https://blog.mozilla.org/calendar/category/lightning/. But if you have earlier versions, check their compatibility with each other on the same blog, and install according to the...
