Re: [Secure boot] and future of linux

Thanks @falke for an interesting link showing that M$ is still ever vigilant in denying any choice to users. It looks like I'm going to have to go back to trying to build my own set up when my current desktop dies. Is it still possible to purchase hard drives that aren't infected with the M$ virus? ...

Re: System freeze caused by Firefox?

Congratulations on solving your problems @ Oxonsi. To help others who might have the same problem to quickly find solutions it helps if you would kindly go back to your original post and 'Edit' the title adding the word [SOLVED]. This has the added advantage of people trying to help others in the fo...

Re: Alternate Problems with Dual Monitors

's OK @Zill, it's not just Poms and Antipodeans, Mrs Odo sometimes gets ruffled feathers at what I consider my funniest lines. The following is a workaround, not a solution. Because I'm CLI-challenged it uses the GUI. Go to System Settings -> Common Appearance and Behaviour -> Application Appearance...

Re: Alternate Problems with Dual Monitors

With all due respect, this seems to be quite a negative response to the help you have been offered. Chill out man. My comment about not having time was legitimate and was not a personal attack on you or others who've tried to help. The bit about the magnifying glass, while true, was an attempt at l...

Re: Alternate Problems with Dual Monitors

Just don't update when you do that. All sarcasm aside, this sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Besides, I'm already experiencing problems with outdated software on an unsupported LM version and don't need to move towards this on a permanent basis. I haven't had time yet to get the magnifying ...

Re: New user : some dumb questions

^^ ^^ There are wise words in both of the above posts. As a M$ to Linux refugee since 2009 and Solyd for the last two years, my experience has been the same. Through unusual circumstances, SolydK has not been quite working properly on my main machine for a couple of months. To get work done, I'm rel...

[Worked Around] Alternate Problems with Dual Monitors

Using Nouveau, the system only recognises my HDMI monitor. I cannot seem to find any way to get the system to recognise my VGA monitor; either during start up or post start up. I am left with one functioning monitor and one blank/black screen. So I tried installing the NVidia driver using Device Dri...

I've just updated the UM. It checks some settings in the conf file after installation. If things still go wrong, you can start the UM with the -c argument Nope, not having success with this either asuseeepc:~$ updatemanager -c upd=2015.01.31 upd=2015.01.31 upd=2015.01.31 upd=2015.01.31 updatemanager...

Re: Upgrade Hangs on 'Installing new version of config file'

/var/cache/apt/archives/lock is another likely candidate. Yep, from memory, I think that was the one. The file /etc/default/grub is the place to make changes. Run update-grub and grub.cfg should reflect them. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I made the change and GRUB now works but...

Re: Incorrect Mirrors List After SolydX32 Update 31/1/15

I'm afraid that hasn't worked. UM was showing version 2.6.0 so I re-installed and rebooted the system. If it's of any use, here is the result of running the command asuseeepc:~$ sudo apt install --reinstall updatemanager [sudo] password for mark: Sorry, try again. [sudo] password for mark: Reading p...

Most likely the other one I mentioned... No, it wasn't, I did check but, as I said, no-one in the room bothered to write down the actual name. Some things to try are mentioned in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=32&t=5246&p=50717#p50717 Thank you for that link. 'Nomodeset' has gotten a semblance of a S...

Re: Upgrade Hangs on 'Installing new version of config file'

Thank you very much for your reply @grizzler. I had hoped to post the results of the commands you suggested but there has been a slight hitch along the way. And unfortunately, at the risk of boring you, I'd like to give you the history. Firstly, running 'sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock' seemed to work, t...

Incorrect Mirrors List After SolydX32 Update 31/1/15

After today's manual update the Update Manager does not seem to recognise the correct mirrors. For economic reasons I prefer to use the mirror at Internode in Australia which happens to be my ISP (=unmetered and much faster). After several retries I decided to manually configure the 'sources.list' f...
