Re: Putting SolydXK to the test with new PC!

I'm getting a new PC tomorrow: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c04072202&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=6529490#N106 Naturally the first thing I'll do is disable the hard drive protection in the BIOS, and then clonezilla the entire HD before I let t...

Re: Xfce desktop icon labels tweak

Link to tutorial and sample pic here , enjoy. Edit: Note; This does not work if you use the Greybird appearance theme. Thanks for this. First thing I always do on Xfce installs is get rid of "ancient" icon text settings! :) One bit of info if I may; the slightly better way to do this sort of thing ...

Re: Im wondering if anyone is still tracking sid?

I have "VSIDO" running as my "production" Sid, loving it. I use Siduction kernels. I prefer them to Liquorix ones now. I am going to wait until the "new" mixture takes effect here; and then I will get a new Testing iso (EE is that right) and probably track that to Sid. I've been having some great fu...

Re: Is XFCE on it's last legs?

Just to, belatedly, add my 2 bobs worth to another of these wonderful discussions that in the end will solve nothing?! :? Linux developers are a bit like camels in the desert in that they can go a LONG while between drinks at the "trough" without being declared dead! As such, I think it is a bit ear...

Re: The new SolydXK - Q+A

Debian reality of life: Small development team = Stable + Backports!! It is just the logical move for a team with limited resources. I applaud it. I think you will have much more time to focus on adding REAL value to the base systems, as well as a good testing ground with "EE". LMDE is moving the sa...

Re: Why does Ubuntu only create an OS and not other software

When Microsoft started its ancillary software development it held a virtual monopoly on the platform on which it could run. Its closed, proprietary nature meant it had no effective competition. Apple likewise, it created its own world to be King of though! Therefore, commercial success was assured e...

Re: What does Solyd mean, really?

I'd like to concentrate on: Implementation of SELinux. Is a system still workable for a home user when SELinux is installed? HD Encryption. I believe we have several topics in this forum about the subject. We'll need to think about how to implement that in the live-installer, or would it be better ...

Re: Dealing with deb-multimedia (DMO)

wouldn't this be something kind of similar to what Stevo & crew over at Mepis does with their CR? Properly package, massage, or backport as needed (IMO "doing it right" as has ever also been Solyd's way from the beginning...) Anyway, doesn't matter, just thinking out loud.... In any case I'm all in...

Re: Annoying Synatics problem

Well it is nice to know it is a bug, sorry I mean feature!! At least I dont have to go hunting around my system to resolve it I think technically they call it a "regression" as it use to work as expected and does again. It only seems to be a problem in the version we have in the repos. Sooooo...

Re: Default boot splash

........................ I find that boot splashes tend to calm those, um, Windows users who migrate to Linux. Explaining to them that "this is how real computers work" doesn't seem to help. :D All I can say is, you must associate with a pretty poor class of ex-Windows user. Nearly every one I have...

Re: Dealing with deb-multimedia (DMO)

Just some "top-of-the-head" thoughts, this needs a proper think: Why do we all use DMO? Play DVDs and run video codecs, yes? Taking the DVDs first; we need a reletively uptodate libdvdcss2. Rather than a repo for this why not do the same as the pepperflash plugin, design a shell wrapper that goes & ...

it is exciting news indeed ;) now, i just need the time to play with it  Like most folk supporting older machines, I too have been very interested in where this project goes. So, I loaded up a couple of older test partitions and had a good look at it for Siduction & Ubuntu. I think they ha...

Re: First day not going well

You need to supply your machine specs. I was trying to install most recent SolydK on some old machines recently (& other distros KDE BTW) and it was running out of memory. I am coming to the view that the newer KDE versions may well run in 1Gb memory once installed but they require 2Gb minimum to ru...

Re: Driver Nvidia legacy-304xx and new kernel

I use Liquorix kernels pretty well exclusively on Desktop machines and ALWAYS use smxi/sgfxi for graphics driver installs. I can confirm SolydX, as well as MX-14 and Vsido Sid, all work perfectly fine on this 6 year old machine using kernel 3.13-6.dmz.1-liquorix-686 and Nvidia 304.119. FWIW, greywolf.

Re: [Experienced users only]: Have a glass of Australis

I have been checking out a "VSIDO" Sid-based distro the last few days (very nice I must say) and it has the new 29.? coming from the Mozilla repos. What a nightmare?!!! They have made some seriously silly changes IMHO, particularly on simple stuff like scrolling and tab operation. Having said that, ...
