Re: Thunar can't handle the load

Probably pcmanfm. Although I prefer doublecommander, but that's doublepane. Feel free to try them. Edit: I remembered that you are still on jessie. Doublecommander has bugs on jessie, so scratch that one. But I can't see any update directly affecting thunar. I don't think anything relevant changed t...

Re: [solved ... and then not !!!] kworker is killing my machine again ...

In crisis mode. Have a look at the askubuntu posting about perf by tanius in https://askubuntu.com/questions/33640/kworker-what-is-it-and-why-is-it-hogging-so-much-cpu . I forgot step 3 after logging the crisis, which is: sudo perf report . It seems to result in a graph. I have never seen such a gra...

Re: [solved ... and then not !!!] kworker is killing my machine again ...

Another approach: Use synaptic to install linux-tools and linux-perf. This will install the version for Kernel 4.9 (they must match), so now reboot and use grub menu to boot into the standard stretch 4.9 kernel and wait for the problem to start. Then: Record some 10 seconds of backtraces on all your...

Re: SolydXK 9 released!

Never. Linux is about freedom, nobody will force you, ever.

But if your device is connected to the internet and you want to stay secure: Debian jessie - and thus SolydXK8 - has LTS support until June 30, 2020. But maybe you should not wait that long to update. Depending on your reasons of course.

Re: Remove xserver-xorg-legacy

To clarify, my argument was: A package that allows xserver to be executed with suid root should never be on a system if not absolutely necessary. No matter whether a bug was found or not. The argument is: Package A unnecessarily opens up an additional attack vector. as a side note, when a security a...

Re: [solved ... and then not !!!] kworker is killing my machine again ...

If kernel developers don't know what to do we also won't be able to fix this. If the liquorix kernel doesn't make things worse, stick with it. Have you added the repo? That way if the problem gets fixed you'll get the fix right away. Have you tried one of the tools mentioned here: https://itsfoss.co...

Re: Remove xserver-xorg-legacy

I have to admit that I did not check all of the cards on that list http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/304.135/README/supportedchips.html but the newest I found was 10 years old, most of them 13-15 years. Maybe it's too early to remove the package but since everybody seems to agree that ...

Remove xserver-xorg-legacy

xserver-xorg-legacy might make debian systems vulnerable to this bug: https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2018-14665 (and probably others too) because it allows xorg to be started with setuid root which is a security risk. xserver-xorg-legacy is installed on my system but is not neede...

Re: [solved ... and then not !!!] kworker is killing my machine again ...

I'm now using 4.18.0-16.1-liquorix-amd64 from Steven Pussers Liquorix backport for stretch and Thunderbird doesn't have any launch problems. Actually, no program has launch problems. Every liquorix kernel starting with 4.11 worked on my otherwise SolydX stable system.

Re: installation for elderly users

Booting into SolydX is much more reliable than booting into Windows. It's not called stable for nothing. In my experience 99% "CD and drivers" work. You'll have to check the hardware for compatibility though but that's obvious and not specific to elderly users. I wouldn't do anything parallel with w...

Re: installation for elderly users

My parents are of the same age and both use SolydX. They don't miss MS stuff at all. I don't do remote administration but guide them via telephone and chat (for console commands). It takes time but that way they learn to handle their own stuff. If your parents have bad eyesight or arthritic hands im...

Re: Gimp 2.10.0?

A new Gimp version will be included in the EE image, but not in the regular images. SolydXK follows debian stable and "stable" means that the software stays the same during the 2-year-period until the next stable version (about summer 2019). Only security updates will be supplied, obviously. But a n...

Re: Really large .xsession-errors

My mistake! I forgot that I have moved xsession-errors and that therefore I have to adapt the script ... I'm sorry. We can't use the ERRFILE variable from /etc/x11/Xsession can't we? I think it's not global but I'll check. Edit: No, doesn't work. Well, not too many people will change the ERRFILE loc...

Re: Firefox-ESR: new tabs do not work; reset firefox button is missing

I can't replicate that problem. Move the content of ~/.mozilla to some backup place and copy the content of /etc/skel/.mozilla/firefox/ into ./mozilla. If firefox now works as expected you can try to figure out how to recreate the profile content from your backup folder if there was anything importa...

Re: Really large .xsession-errors

MAX_BYTES=$((MAX_MB*1000)) This needs to be 1000000 otherwise you have KB not MB. And I would per default set MAX_MB to maybe 500 to make sure that if a log overflow happens the script won't run too often (reports are up to 8 GB growth/hour). 2 x 500 MB is a size every system can tolerate. And I'm ...

It looks like they provide a ticketing system for others. But just a guess, really. edit . Nearly forgot so UFW is good the way it is and...
