Re: HOWTO: Restore Non-UEFI MBR from Live ISO

Just a sec ... there was no "update-grub" command ... Alright ... ... color me face red. In my defense, I've always been terrified of messing about with Grub cuz it seems to be one of the "dark arts" and leads to bad things. But in this case, running a simple "update-grub" did the trick (afte...

Re: HOWTO: Restore Non-UEFI MBR from Live ISO

From inside the SolydX install: os-prober returns "/dev/sda1:Windows NT/2000/XP (loader) :Windows:chain"

also, no errors reported when doing the commands above.

Re: HOWTO: Restore Non-UEFI MBR from Live ISO

First off, the new community edition SolydX/K 32-bit is lovely. On top of Debian 8, it's a distinct winner. Problem: installed 32-bit SolydX on older non-UEFI laptop, Pentium M, non-PAE, intending to dual-boot with WinXP install. (Have done this sort of dual-boot Linux install several times on other...

Re: No image in normal boot

Updated latest "Jessie" flurry; rebooted & discovered it killed my graphics. Same screen as OP: black with flashing squares on one edge, and huge arrow for mouse action. Suspecting it was an incompatibility with my old ATI-Radeon 9200SE card in my ancient Compaq Presario S4000T, I pulled the card an...

Re: HOWTO: Restore Non-UEFI MBR from Live ISO

@ScottQuier Thank you for saving my butt! (I upgraded my desktop machine, my laptop, my wife's laptop from SolydX HE to Jessie. All went well.) Feeling confident, I then upgraded my wife's desktop machine (WinXP; SolydX dual-boot) from HE to Jessie. At the very end, the Grub screen popped up, but wo...

So, just to clarify: I find this "preferences.solydxk" file (and ~.d directory) in my etc/apt folder: graybyrd@s4000t:/etc/apt$ cat preferences.solydxk Package: * Pin: release o=solydxk Pin-Priority: 700 Package: * Pin: origin packages.solydxk.nl Pin-Priority: 700 Package: * Pin: release o=Debian Pi...

Re: Is there are flash update [SOLVED]

Nice! I just read this warning in "The Register" warning of 15 hijack flaws being patched, and this: "Users of Adobe Flash Player for Linux should update to Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.442." Found that 11.2.202.440 was the last installed; did a quick apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade and Voila!...

Re: New Version of Dropbox Out Dropbox 3.1.277

I agree: as long as the software works, I'm happy. Slowly I'm learning (and have the scars) that so-called upgrades are not always a good thing. There are a few 'gotcha' items, tho. I really REALLY did prefer the old Firefox. The so-called "improvements" seem like adding layers of chocolate frosting...

Re: New Version of Dropbox Out Dropbox 3.1.277

http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Communications/Filesharing/Dropbox-41209.shtml Ummm ... nice tip, but that website basically says that most folks find the terminal too complex, so the advice is to simply go with the outdated version that's in the repo? Seems less than helpful ... ? The current Jessi...

Re: WINE??

Success with Wine: a kind linux user on the Scrivener forum (literatureandlatte.com) gave me this excellent advice about running the latest version of Wine, so my suite of Windows apps could run effectively under SolydXK (SolydX in my case). 1. Download the latest version of Wine from the Wine onlin...

Re: 32-bit Support?

Thank you! It's very nice to hear, and here's a word of appreciation to the skilled volunteers who make this possible. You folks do a great service to the user community. For what it's worth, SolydXK has been a superb distro from the beginning. With SolydXK, along with #! Linux on our older laptops,...

32-bit Support?

Did dist-upgrade from SolydX HE Wheezy to SolydX Jessie last evening, following Terminal process posted on board (with new repo list). Had some package breaks & error freezes, but solved those & completed the upgrade. Now running SolydX "Jessie" on 32-bit Pentium 4, 686 PAE threaded. QUESTION: I see...

Re: LibreOffice as default office package in SolydX

The free download for SoftMaker Free Office for Linux (there is also a free version for Windows) is at: http://www.freeoffice.com Yes, they do ask that you register and supply an email address, but this is so they can generate a serial number key for the product, which is then emailed to you. I'm no...

Re: Password entry corrupted

Thanks for that ... I used nano to make the changes; the startup was able to go past the password screen stage and resume another SolydK splash screen ... which then stalled. Apparently something fundamental has happened with this Itronix 260+ GoBook, as I'm not able to get past that exact same spot...

Re: Password entry corrupted

old_guy: thanks for the advice. invoking 'startx' produces a screen but it stalls before getting to pw entry; apt-get --reinstall is not recognized; aptitude --reinstall kdm did reinstall ok, but did not solve the problem. Password entry won't accept input; system hangs. Wish I knew what config file...

Password entry corrupted

Device: Itronix 260+ GoBook, 32 bit, SolydK '686-PAE installation. Latest update pack. Problem: had a forced restart (machine hangup on usb device insertion). Result: Reboot, password screen appears, typing disabled. No cursor, no characters. Dead. Must press power key to force restart/shutdown. Reo...

I hear Washington stays wet so I'd probably become gloomy being a desert creature myself that rides all year round on 2 wheels. Ahhh, rokytnji ... those 'rumurs' about all the damp 'n moss 'n such on the wet side of the Cascades are greatly exagerated. Iffen they weren't, everybody would want to li...

A revolution in interface design!

Windows 8 n’ Hot Dogs! I got a touch screen ‘puter and I tried Windows 8 on it, and I just hate it when I have to rub my finger on that draggy-plastic surface, you know? So I got this, like, idea that hot dogs are a lot like fingers ... so I got a pack of hot dogs, but not the frozen ones, you know...

@ Dr G: yes, sir, you have my blessing to use that piece. And to everyone else, thank you for your kindness! To be honest, I had a great deal of fun writing that ... after all, MiriclSoft (Our motto: a miracle every minute with MiriclSoft!) did all of the work for me! :D

Re: An enhanced user experience ... !

Thanks! It was great fun to write ... and you are correct. Everytime I think of MSoft, I envision an ant lion trap and a hungry beast hidden in the bottom, eating its unwary victims. Once in the trap, the victim is unable to scramble up the sand slope as it crumbles and slides away beneath them. Sor...
