Re: New Installer?

the reason for a home slice is to protect your data. i messed up a couple installs ago and totally broke my OS right after getting everything set up just so... i uninstalled virtually ALL my packages  reinstalled the OS and because i had a home partition ALL my settings and data were fine, eve...

Re: laptop brightness

on SolydK:

System Settings --> Power Management --> Energy Saving

you will have tabs on the top for On AC Power, On Battery and On Low Battery and should be able to set them all how you want them.

Re: Multiple monitors on different adapters

least we ruled that out. good luck! at this point, barring someone with a clue coming along, i would start to compare the way Ubuntu installs things to how Solyd does... rather crude of me, i know, but i am a simple guy with a lot of time on my hands. i am one of those blessed souls who has always h...

Re: Multiple monitors on different adapters

did the integrated video ever work while you had a second card installed? i have found on old Dells and such that when you upgrade the vid card the system deactivates the integrated card to free up the resources. if this is the case, i believe only a firmware upgrade will make it work. otherwise, i ...

Re: UEFI and Windows 8 Update on Windows/Linux dual-boot sys

actually, i went through most of the process of making this new laptop dual boot... mostly to see if i could and what the big deal was. i wont tell you it was easy, but i feel that is mostly from it being new and narrowly documented. i was going to write a tutorial on the whole process but i got so ...

i have been a Debian fan since the 90's... all weirdy beardy and so forth... but now i am to where i just cant be bothered to muck about with everything. i spent 17 hours the other day jousting with 8.1 for the first time and finally hit this point: http://assets.amuniversal.com/635e18005e08012ee3bf...

Re: Weird Graphical Artifacts Since Update

i just got a new lappy and found this thread because i have the same issues on my Intel video... is there a point to my adding my system info to help debug this or is it totally out of SolydK's control? for now, i am going to try Dr G's work around... Thanks for that! edit: turning off the desktop e...

Re: High memory usage

i am so not an expert on this by any means, but my basic understanding is the disk caching bit is pretty well embedded in how modern *nix operates and cant be turned off or really adjusted... course, its still *nix, so if you really want it gone or changed you can, but the consensus is it works juuu...

Re: High memory usage

going by my personal experiences, your screenshots are showing where the problem lies: firefox. i had some vicious memory leaks from a slew of lame websites that dont follow spec or flat out abuse it (mostly for marketing and tracking purposes). for me, making sure Firefox was up to date and tweaked...

you know... when the biggest complaints are small and insignificant, you are doing pretty ok ;) i totally get that the people behind Solyd are not native English speakers, but if you are trying to "be the next XP" or any sort of serious distro, this stuff totally matters.... first impressions and al...

Re: UP communication complaints.

my bad, i thought i did... it didnt go like that at all. it has in the past though... i guess three UPs ago or so when i first started using this distro. basically, all that came up in the window for the UM was the same output as you see when you type updatemanager at the shell... echoing of a norma...
