Re: Skype - ineffective call

Skype users might consider checking out JITSI . From the site: "Jitsi (formerly SIP Communicator) is an audio/video and chat communicator that supports protocols such as SIP, XMPP/Jabber, AIM/ICQ, Windows Live, Yahoo! and many other useful features. Jitsi is Open Source / Free Software, and is avail...

[SOLVED] User Badges

I've noticed that some users have a user badge(s) as part of their signature; e.g. SolydX User or SolydK User. How does one get one of those?

Re: Your First Linux Distro?

Mine was Mandriva/Mandrake. I remember walking to a CompUSA across the street from where I worked and purchased the installation kit. When I installed it, I thought to myself, "You've got to be kidding me!" Linux has come a long way since that experience.

Re: Installing TLP (via PPA??)

@Zam...I'll give it a try. Why are PPAs in Debian not a good idea? Because in general, PPAs contain packages designed for Ubuntu and derivative distros. Ubuntu is a customized snapshot of Debian Unstable. There may be instances where packages from a PPA work fine, but there's no guarantee. Additiona...

Re: Can't find hardinfo

@Provia...there are ways to get HardInfo if you really want it. One way would be to find the site hosting the application and see if they have a *.deb to download. Another way would be to add the Debian Testing repo to your sources list and then appropriately pin the repo in your preferences file. Y...

I'm Smitten

I read about SolydXK in issue 2 of Linux Voice. I tried out SolydX in a VM, but it didn't stay there very long. I really like the look and feel of the distro. I had concerns about installing it on one of my laptops due to a legacy AMD graphics chip, but after a dist-upgrade, everything worked fine. ...

Re: Should I use apt-get or aptitude?

I concur with what zerozero stated. There's a good post over in the Siduction forums that basically states the same thing about why you should use apt-get in a Sid-based distro. Edit: From the Siduction forum: "...We recommend apt-get because its dumb enough for a fast moving target like sid. aptitu...
