I checked the associations and both .swf and .spl are set to Firefox. BTW - I have also removed "browser-plugin-vlc" and there is no change to the .swf issue.

[SOLVED] VLC hijacks Firefox for .swf files

When opening a .swf file (Firefox is associated with the file), Firefox opens, but VLC attempts to run the file. In Firefox Applications settings, Shockwave is the designated action, but it is clearly being ignored. If I remove VLC, then the .swf file will open in Shockwave via Firefox as intended. ...
