Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

I might have it working now. I tried a number of commands to unlock /var/log/samba - most of them didn't work. However, while in /var/log, I invoked "sudo chown -R root samba". At that point, it did not appear that samba was installed - somewhere along the line, the purge of samba worked - it was th...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

The other two also worked: jim@solydxk:~$ sudo dpkg --audit The following packages are only half configured, probably due to problems configuring them the first time. The configuration should be retried using dpkg --configure <package> or the configure menu option in dselect: samba SMB/CIFS file, pr...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

Maybe you should try to get a hold of those files in /var/log by editing /etc/fstab and creating a small partition for it instead of tmpfs. I did that and it's generally a much more stable configuration although it might put more wear on your SSD (if you even have one). I think I will. Actually, in...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

I found that the "awk" test does work. There was an error in the command .... there is no space between W and | and there is a space between \ and n. dpkg-query -f '${status} ${package} \n' -W| awk '$3 == "half-configured" {print $4}' I ran it on my regular system and it brought up samba as half-con...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

I did reboot to run the tests and nothing showed on any of them. I only saved dpkg.log before reboot because I wasn't certain what would happen to it on reboot since log files tend to not be saved. I was curious what the data looked like .... I have to look at the awk command structure - maybe there...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

I agree, but I tried them all and nothing. Something very strange is going on ..... Here is a sample of the dpkg.log file directly after installing the update files - the next step would be to reboot the system. 2017-10-01 08:07:17 startup archives unpack 2017-10-01 08:07:18 upgrade base-files:amd64...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

I have a test setup now, but nothing conclusive as of yet. At present on my regular system, I now have the usual three (smbd.service, nmbd.service and haveged.service) back in failed mode as well as samba itself. I tried to reinstall samba, but it will not work because /var/log/samba/ still exists a...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

It looks like the weekend is not a good time to try and reinstall the system. Apparently the servers are overloaded - I had the download process halt a few times and the process lockup. I did get one installation started and it appeared that when I reinstalled printer-driver-cups-pdf, I started gett...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

I am trying a new installation using the same /home to see if anything I was doing in that process triggered the failure. This may take a day or two.

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

All has returned to quiet in the house and my cat is happy once again. <G> Before the commands you had asked for, I ran this morning's update of ghostcript files and got the usual "half-installed" file reports. It appears that anything installed will be "half-installed" or "half-configured" ..... dp...

Okay ..... I saw an intersting item in there. Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

Just did this morning's update of mostly solydxk apps and everything is "half-configured" and "half-installed" ..... whatever that means. dpkg.log: 2017-09-29 06:59:20 startup archives unpack 2017-09-29 06:59:21 upgrade debian-plymouth-manager:all 2.5.3 2.5.4 2017-09-29 06:59:21 status half-configur...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

Looks like archlinux is pretty much in the dark about msg.sock permissions. I tries dpkg --configure -a and nothing was returned, From this either the problem no longer exists or it checks the dpkg.log for it's information and the log has been wiped. I'll just leave it for a while and see what happe...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

It looks like things may be "normal" now. I now have file headers in /var/lib/samba/private/msg.sock where I did not before. What puzzles me is that the permissions were originally 755 and an error message came out that said they should be 700. It was after I chmod 700 that the services returned to ...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

These services are correctly masked. I can't figure out what's wrong ("bad") about them. I just ran a re-installation of samba in synaptic and it seemed to run okay except that the "half-installed" and "half-configured" notations are still there. I wonder if that is related to whatever is making th...

Re: Samba Daemon crash after update

Yes - this is a freshly installed system - I reinstalled it perhaps about a week ago and I backup everything twice a week. Just as a safeguard, I did a backup this morning. I only have the latest backup - I do not save prior backups other than once a month I put a copy on disk. I am using the KDE ve...
