Re: Nvidia/libcairo2 memory use

Anyhow I can confirm the memory bug is still present. I went from ~200mb with nouveau to over 600mb with Nvidia. Kinda like having a 64 Volkswagon that got 35 mpg, but deciding that you wanted a bit more bling, so you decided to buy a Lexis that got 25 mpg. Then, after you took it in for your annua...

I swear there used to be somewhat of an answer (here) to my (above) question, stating that "yes it was still a problem", but it appears to have disappeared into the "nether-net".

Re: Ikey launches evolve-os

Yep! IT IS SolydXK Fault! . Not in my case, I'm a Natural Born Curmudgeon (tm), and consider most die hard cynics as mere dilettantes. I can't blame Schoelje, I was this way a long time before I ever learned of him (or SolydXK), just ask my wife and kids, friends, neighbors (well, anyone th...

Re: Nvidia/libcairo2 memory use

OK, it's been almost a month now, time to ask the question "Is this (nvidia/libcairo2/memory-use) still a problem for some folks? Or has Schoelje, in his copious free time, with nothing else to do, found the answer? :)

Re: Ikey launches evolve-os

...both complained about the politics in Debian. Politics? In Debian? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you...:) The thing, tho, as long as it's not an independent distro, if Ikey pulls up stakes, "If you like your linux distro, you can keep it" (to borrow a phrase). To be fair and honest, irrc, Ikey did...

Re: Ikey launches evolve-os

Not to put a damper on the "I Love Ikey" theme, but in my opinion, this is just another project that he'll start, huff and puff about, change things endlessly (and needlessly)...then abandon in righteous indignation.

Look at the history (LMDE, Solus1, Solus2). Just sayin'.

Re: Nvidia/libcairo2 memory use

For me, reverting to nouveau (or better yet, not installing the nvidia drivers) is really not an option. I really have no need for the 3D aspect of nvidia, but thru weeks of testing, I find that on my laptop with a nVidia G86 [GeForce 8400M GS] the gpu runs in excess of 10C hotter, while the cpu run...

Slackware in late '94. Then, the next month, I found FreeBSD and the decidedly immature Linux was forgotten for more than a decade :)

OK, If this is indeed the culprit, the question now is "Is this behavior seen with a fresh install from ISO [not the b1 ISO] and the latest UP or just the b1 ISO?".

Re: ISO testing - 201311

1) OK, I lied, I forgot that I had installed the nvidia driver. 2) After installing the nvidia driver this time (via ddm) the usage shot up to ~500mb again. I have used the 319.60 driver (in another distro, and it was dl'd directly from nvidia, although I'm not sure it was the -2 version), and the R...

Nope :(

I reinstalled and now it's running at the expected ~250mb.

Re: ISO testing - 201311

Grabbed the new b1 SolydX-64 ISO. Had no problems burning and installing from a USB stick (w/o plymouth...don't get me started :) Added htop (I like it ). Checked the RAM usage on a fresh boot with nothing but the terminal (with htop) open... +450mb at idle? !!!! As I haven't really <used> SolydX in...

What do you think quote in the article: SolydK is excellent, too, but it’s a newcomer, and it might not be with us next year, the same thing that happened to Fuduntu. I think it's exactly what he (and ZZ) says. Once you've been around the block a time or two (or ten or twenty), you've seen more tha...

Dedoimedo's been at it again: http://netrunner-mag.com/?p=3184

And he has some nice things to say about SolydK (see Candidate 4 :)

Re: SolydXK - Book Club - (Sort of) ~8^)

Read the "Lord of the Rings" in the 1980's and have re-read them all every couple of years.. Well, some books (like LOTR) are exempt from the Law of Diminishing Returns, Any [Le Guin] available as free eBooks? I really doubt it, she still sells well. But most public libraries have at least some of ...

Re: SolydXK - Book Club - (Sort of) ~8^)

One of the very few advantages to getting older is the fact that books you read 20, 30 or 40 years ago can be re-read with pleasure. Following that thought, I've taken up Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea series (again): A Wizard of Earthsea, 1968 (Lewis Carroll Shelf Award winner, 1979) The Tombs of Atu...
