Re: Breakages and News - SolydX-tracking Debian SID

according to this bug report it's plymouth the guilty; Of course I have a much simpler solution to plymouth problems like this?! It is part of my post-install routine: $ sudo apt-get purge plymou* :D All the trouble it causes for what; pretty pictures while my machine boots up? I must just be getti...

Re: Displaying a user icon/avatar on login?

Hi all, Has anybody figured out how to replace the generic monitor icon on the SolydX login screen with a user-selected icon? I've been trying a few solutions discussed on various fora to no avail. If I recall correctly, it used to be as simple as creating an icon called ".face" and moving it to th...

Re: GUI for System Control

Many of the folk I support have what I would call "barely adequate" hardware by todays standards. In fact many of them cannot run OpenSuse because of the resource requirements, and, as good as it is, Yast has become a large part of that. Personally, I would prefer to see the PCLinuxOS Control Center...

we did something similar here viewtopic.php?f=33&t=584 and are taking this as a good fallback if in the end of the month testing is in no good condition to synchronize with our Production repos. I know I was asked to participate in the testing for UPs, but I find it really difficult to commit to ti...

The Latest Experiment

Here is the latest installation experiment some may be interested in. I installed a stock standard SolydX install, changed nothing in apt preferences or sources, made sure it was updated to the latest Update Pack, and added my usual 20 or so apps that are not there from the iso (all from standard re...

Re: K9copy is no longer available?

I have moved to Ogmrip for all my dvd ripping needs since K9copy stopped development. I have found it does a good enough job for my needs. Everything is in the repos: $ acs ogmrip libogmrip-dev - Application for ripping and encoding DVD - development files libogmrip1 - Application for ripping and en...

A SolydXK Marketing Opportunity

I would suggest we will enter a period of opportunity in the next few months for all users to strongly market the benefits of the SolydXK approach to updates. The release of Wheezy Stable means the development phase is on again, with unstable & testing being more vulnerable to breakage than normal. ...

Bug with : ifupdown 0.7.41 HERE - Aptosid Forum BUG Report Suggested to put on hold until ifupdown 0.7.43 I am only going from memory here, but, didn't this happen the last time the freeze ended when Squeeze was released. Re: When I discovered VIM

If you want to have a bit of fun with cli; try running a "zsh" shell rather than bash. More powerful, MUCH easier, IMHO, and not so different to learn. Also, there is 'mc' for file management, 'mutt' with 'dovecot' or 'exim' for mail. Being Debian based, there are plenty of applications in the repos...

Re: [brainstorm] can we "make" a new theme for SolydXK?

pick up this project I just don't have time to commit to such a thing. I barely have enough time to login here regularly; and I don't like to promise what I can't deliver. However, having said that, I am happy to put out a few "feelers" to the themers I know and see what responses might be around. ...

Re: SolydX does not support Mobile Broadband

Wicd developers are not planning mobile broadband support until version 2.0; currently at 1.7.2 here. I think it will be some time before v2.0?! It is clearly an "upstream" issue. In the meantime, your only choice are these 'manual' workarounds with wvdial, etc. If you are going to run SolydXK from ...

Re: [brainstorm] can we "make" a new theme for SolydXK?

My take on this is that we should not think of it so much in terms of KDE & Xfce but Qt & Gtk! It is the underlying library of "widgets and wotchets" that is where we should look for common ground. That leads pretty much to Qtcurve as the underlying solution for uniformity. It comes in GTk2, Gtk3 an...

Re: Swappiness

A lot is said about newer systems not needing a swap file/partition at all because they tend to come with so much physical ram. Your "average" user can get away with no swap if they have 8Gb or more of ram - some say 4Gb but I have found that problematic. However, if your machine (laptop) will utili...

Solved - KDE desktop alternatives

I don't want to run a poll on this, but I would be grateful if any of you running the KDE version would care to comment on why you do or don't run the "Desktop View" or the "Folder View"? Most KDE enthusiasts I know seem to prefer the Desktop View but can't really explain why?! Myself, I tend to mig...

You've gotten my curiosity up, Greywolf. What do they do to resolve the lack of ease in being green? Without wanting to drift too far off topic here, they were basically "hobbled"! Apart from randomly dropping from 7200 rpm to 5400 rpm, the big problem was to do with Head Parking. This link explain...
