Editing whisker menu favourites

How can I get rid of whisker menu entry "favourites"? The entries are Exaille, Pidgin and XChat which I have never used and probably never will. Also there is Settings but that already has its separate category so it's superfluous. I tried Alacarte and Menulibre but none of them lets me edit the fav...

Howto: Launch truecrypt or other programs from FAT32 USB

As a beginner with Linux I'm running into problems which probably would be no problem at all for anybody else. But I could imagíne that, as the Linux userbase grows, other people might have the same problem, so I thought that, whenever it takes a long non-straight-forward search to find a solution o...

Re: Desktop scaling

I'm answering my own question here - just in case somebody else wants to do the same.

It's not as easy as choosing "120%" somewhere :-( but you can change the theme in the Settings Manager under "Erscheinungsbild" and "Fensterverwaltung" and then scale font size or dpi for the selected theme.

Desktop scaling

As I'm getting older every day my eyesight gets worse and worse. That's why I keep WinXP at 120% nowadays. How can I achieve that on my Linux desktop - XFCE specifically but I would change to another if it is not possible there. I want to scale everything at once - apply the scaling factor to all wi...

Worked. Thanks again.
with the known risk that is running the browser as root
I did that under Win for 15 years - day after day ... once every update won't scare me :-)

Re: Solyd install on 2 disks (work around installer limitati

When I originally did it I tried to follow your instructions and got confused half of the way - I had to reinstall from scratch because nothing worked anymore. Probably because I was trying to apply everything not only to /home but also to /var and as far as I can understand that wouldn't work with ...

Solyd install on 2 disks (move /home and /var)

The installer Solyd uses has one shortcoming: You can install /root and /home on different partitions but not on different media. This is bad especially if you are installing on a SSD - you want only root on the SSD not those parts of the filesystem where a lot of stuff is written all the time. So y...

Re: Silly if not stupid question

I know this thread is already old but since I had the same problem as OP (Install on 2 mediums which is not working with the present installer) I wanted to share my solution: I installed everything on the first HD and moved /tmp /var /swap and /home to the second one afterwards. I did it this way an...

Re: firefox update hangs

Thank you for you answer Zero, that was probably obvious for you - I'm still having problems to bend my windows-educated mind around Linux curves :-) But I suspected something like that. So I will find out how to start FF with root privileges only for the update. Regarding FF installation place: I t...

Re: firefox update hangs

"Since the localisation problems" - I explicitly wrote why I don't stick with the solyd repositories. They might be up-to-date but I need the native localized FF version and as far as I know I can't get it through solyds repos. Solyds localisation concept just doesn't work with my non-english langua...

firefox update hangs [solved]

Since the localisation problems we non-english had in May I installed Firefox (and Thunderbird) directly and disabled the solyd packages. Everything worked well. I got to like this solution, cause when Solyd switches to stable FF and TB will still be up-to-date - well theoretically. Practically FF d...

Solyd vs. Mageia

My father just installed Mageia and I will have a look at it later this week. Did anybody of you try it? As far as I can see, both Solyd and Mageia are community driven (a big community in case of Mageia) and european. While Solyd is based on debian testing or stable, Mageia is based on Mandriva whi...

Re: What does Solyd mean, really?

The legality of using a particular web service is irrelevant to the defaults built in to a distro. It is solely the user's responsibility to ensure that their internet usage is compliant with local laws and regulations (which may well be very different to laws elsewhere in the world). Schoelje star...

Re: What does Solyd mean, really?

Startpage.com is operated by Ixquick, a dutch (hinthint @Schoelje ;) ) company. They claim that they don't spy and have been certified. In fact they claim the same things Duckduckgo claims. I can't personally verify whether these claims are true, neither for startpage, Ixquick nor for Duckduckgo. Al...

Re: SolydXK's TODO List

I had some introductory courses into Typo3 and I can tell you, it's a gigantic tool with plugins for almost everything, blog, social media and your hardwareshop included. It's the "eierlegende Wollmilchsau" ( hope you understand that) among CMS. But it's not something you use on-the-fly - it n...

@Fleabus: I edited my post and removed your name. Apparently you feel critcized and I never meant to do that. You had a lot of interesting Ideas and I was only trying to add to the discussion. I didn't want to turn the debate ad hominem by that. Obviously I did and I'm really sorry I mentioned your ...

Re: What does Solyd mean, really?

I'm a bit late on this topic and I'd llike to go back to the questions Schoelje originally asked. 1. Regarding stability: I already posted my suggetions on renaming here: http://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4349&p=42036&#p42036 and I think that would be enough for the moment (provided tha...

Re: Read the very fine manual!

To be honest: I would have chosen the rolling distribution anyway - secretly I want to be a geek  .... If I could be young again :( But that doesn't mean others should walk into the same trap. It took me some time to come back to this thread but I hope I can still help. 1. Unstable Edition I w...

Sorry for posting before searching.

In spite of that error apt dist-upgrade resulted in: 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Good.

Relog and - fingers crossed - reboot. Puh!

Thank you very much for your support Scott!
