Yeah, okay, I do like the radar.

Edit: Just installed it. Where's the option for the radar?

Re: Use XFCE-Panel in KDE

For the sake of clarity, the reason I personally don't like KDE's weather widgets is that I couldn't find any that provided quick and easy to access to an extended forecast. I love the way the XFCE weather plugin displays up to 8 days worth of forecasts in rows and columns. The extended forecasts ar...

Re: My Laptop Just Croaked... I think

Thanks for that reply. Your thoughts have been mine as well. Here's where I'm at: 1.) I'm not a gamer and neither are my daughters. 2.) I use my laptop to write (which any ol' computer can do) and stream videos (or play DVDs). I've found that none of my rescued laptops have enough power to smoothly ...

Re: My Laptop Just Croaked... I think

Bummer. I'm left with a 32 bit laptop from 2006. Doesn't have enough juice to run Netflix full screen. My wife's laptop is an old HP netbook with a 16 gig SSD, vintage 2008.

Looks like I'm in the market for a new computer. Gonna' go check out System 76. Any suggestions are welcome.

My Laptop Just Croaked... I think

My Sony VAIO, about 4 or 5 years old, just went... <blip>. And that was that. The transformer seems to be working, but the laptop doesn't respond to anything. At all. It's dead as dead as dead. My bet is that it's the power supply. Didn't lose anything, since everything is backed up in triplicate bu...

Re: KDE 5

What do you mean by "closed windows"? Let's say you restarted KDE. In that case, you need to put xfce4-panel in your startup group. system settings ---> Startup & Shutdown ---> Add Program (Button Top Right) ---> and type in xfce4-panel As to why it might not be showing up with Alt+f2? Either you're...

Use XFCE-Panel in KDE

Do the following in terminal: sudo apt-get install xfce4-panel xfce4-dict xfce4-weather-plugin -y The -y switch just means it won't ask for confirmation. Remove "-y" if you want confirmation. Once that's done. Close terminal and type alt+f2. That should bring up a run dialog in your panel. Type xfce...

Re: KDE 5

//As I've mentioned in other posts through the forum, for me "eye candy" is important because I don't want to be staring at a screen all day coding and have the screen's overall ugliness distract me from my work. (That's one of my pet peeves with xfce, Gnome and variants).// Funny you should write t...

Great feedback. I'm going to download it this evening and install it on a spare partition. Combine this with Wayland, eventually, and wow.

Installing Popcorn in SolydXK -- echo and tee commands?

So, I was reading about Popcorn at Webupd8 . The post provides a way to install Popcorn in "Debian": su - echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/popcorntime/ubuntu trusty main" | tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/webupd8team-popcorntime.list echo "deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/popco...

Re: KDE 5

As for donating, here too, if I struck it rich; but even a little bit helps. After an unemployed winter (no building), I've just been trying to catch up with the season's bills. I don't mind the update cycle so much. At this point, all the KDE Distros based on Trusty Tar have a newer version of KDE,...

KDE 5

Just reading up on KDE's latest at Distrowatch. I noticed that Kubuntu users can install KDE 5/Beta via PPA and by other means . Nothing for Debian. I briefly fantasized compiling from the PPA , then imagined my electric bill and figured KDE 6 would be ready by the time my laptop was done compiling....

Re: Noise in Microphone

I have the same issues on my system and unfortunately have been unable to solve it. Since I never had these problems with any Ubuntu distro, it probably has to do with a combination of KDE & Debian.

Re: Yep seems there is obsession about ram usage?

Also, you might try experimenting with the QT Graphics System --> Desktop Effects --> Advanced. I've found, on both my systems, that using Raster noticeably improves the responsiveness of window related tasks (assuming you want to keep eye-candy).

Re: Yep seems there is obsession about ram usage?

Some of the apparent "slowness" of KDE has to do with eye-candy. If you set the "Animation Speed", under 'Desktop Effects' in System Settings, to "very fast", I've found that the "apparent feel" of KDE is much improved.

Re: Yep seems there is obsession about ram usage?

Besides memory usage, I actually find that KDE runs better, quicker and smoother than XFCE, and I say that with a touch of regret (being that I like XFCE). There are many factors that go into responsiveness besides the amount of RAM used. There just isn't a 1 to 1 relationship between RAM usage and ...

Re: solydk-system-adjustments exits with error code 1

On my other 64 bit Solydk installation, everything installed without a hitch, sort of. I noticed that the upgrade appended ".divert" to my lock screen image (as with the other laptop) and the result was a blank screen? Had to rename the relevant images. Seems like this upgrade was somewhat problemat...
