Difference betweenBusiness Edition and Back Office

Postby chi » 07 Jan 2014 00:57

Hi all:

I was preparing to install Mint, but kept reading and found solynxk. I am really happy as I want to find a distro that cater to small business. I saw that there are two versions for business, Business Edition and Back Office. I searched the site, the web and forum, didn't find any details about the difference between the two. Can you please tell me what are the main differences between the two? Thanks!

Just click on Business tab on the home page. At the top and each has it's own page explaining the differences.
Basically the differences as stated is BE is based on stable branch with older software and 3yrs LTS support.
Only updates you will get are security updates.

BO is based on testing which means updates to Desktop,Kernel and Applications are done now quarterly.
And have more Business type apps installed by default.

And all this stated in those pages. So not understanding exactly what info you are wanting?

Thanks for the response. It cleared the points for me. Yes I am aware of the links :) and I read the two links a few times before I posted the question. For example the word "testing" and "quarterly" are not on the page for BO

Well Testing was monthly update packs. But do to work involved they have implemented a new update for testing giving them more time to test to quarterly.

Sorry Orbmiser, but all BE's are based on Debian stable.
Thanks for pointing that out. I have changed the text on the BO product page to reflect that:
SolydK BO is based on SolydK BE. Like SolydK BE it provides “Long Term Support” based on Debian Stable. Where SolydK BE provides a solid desktop, SolydK BO aims to support the following main business processes:
  • Internal information streams with LetoDMS.
  • Employee management with OrangeHRM.
  • Customer relations, and leads with Zurmo.
  • Build and manage a professional site with Typo3.
  • Invoicing with SiWapp.
These business applications are web-based and can be shared through your entire organization. All you need is a browser.
In other words: BE is just like the home editions, but pointing at Debian stable instead of Debian testing. BO does the same, but has additional packages installed to support the above mentioned business processes. This software is packaged by me, only for BO, and helps small and medium businesses to automate their business governance (at least to some degree, because each and every business is unique).

In fact I am still not convinced about the role of business, backoffice and Home editions. While Business edition is for stability and nothing more, how does it differ from the regular SolydXK distros which are created with the motive of providing stability over other Debian distros. While I find a variety of business apps in BO edition, I do not find any such thing in BE. Perhaps the name Business may be changed to `Enterprise' which perhaps can suit with the general nomenclature adopted by other distros.
