I am writing this message from WinXP.

Downloaded and installed UP 2013.11.06 Using the Update Manager.

All went okay, Firefox and Thunderbird were updated as per Info Page.

As before, when rebooting the Grub screen appears followed by the login screen (multitude of text messages) but then the screen turns 'blank' - I am basically unable using the system. I rebooted several times with with the same result.

I tried hitting all available keys on the keyboard but no use. I also tried recovery but don't know which command to enter.
Request help.
This looks like the problem discussed/solved here --> http://forums.solydxk.nl/viewtopic.php?p=19181#p19181
Press <Ctrl><Alt><Fx> where x is between 1 and 6 ... this will open a full screen console and display a login prompt. Log in as root and then

Code: Select all

# mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
# reboot
If I'm right, you should be point where you can log in normally.
Thanks for responding.

Code: Select all

# mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
resulted in
mv: cannot stat '/etc/X11/xorg.conf': No such file or directory.

I then did

Code: Select all

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
and repeated your suggestion but same result.
Any other suggestions, please?

If you had nvidia installed:

Code: Select all

apt-get purge nvidia*
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
rm /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia*
If not, try the steps I wrote for dirigible: http://forums.solydxk.nl/viewtopic.php?p=19224#p19224

Yes, nvidia is/was installed.

Code: Select all

apt-get purge nvidia*
Implemented as suggested, okay.

Code: Select all

rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
rm: '/etc/xorg.conf': No such file or directory

Code: Select all

rm /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia*
rm: '/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia*: No such file or directory

rebooted
The Solyd restart screen with running bar is displayed.

The Solyd login screen with running bar appears and followed by 'blank' screen again.

Any other suggestions please.

Create wireless connection
From http://www.ghacks.net/2009/04/14/connec ... mand-line/

Code: Select all

ifup wlan0
iwconfig wlan0 essid NETWORK_ID key s:WIRELESS_KEY
dhclient wlan0
Where NETWORK_ID is the actually essid of the network and WIRELESS_KEY is the security key for that network.

You can scan networks in your neighborhood with:

Code: Select all

iwlist wlan0 scan
Looks like my WiFi device is not called wlan0 as suggested at http://www.ghacks.net/2009/04/14/connec ... mand-line/
It's a USB to WiFi adapter. lsusb comes back with ...

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0b05:17ab ASUSTek Computer, Inc. USB-N13 802.11n Network Adapter (rev. B1) [Realtek RTL8192CU]
Could any part of the above be the device name?

Anyway, from this working partition I can see that the files
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia*
do exist.
Without an internet connection is it still worth trying to remove them?

Yes, try that first.
If that didn't do it, you can get the wireless interface by simply running:

Code: Select all

iwconfig

Fixed it, and then broke it again.

Removed
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia*
Rebooted, and KDE desktop came back.
Issued the suggested commands in order.
Rebooted, all good. But then I did something...

I ran DDM and saw that I'm not running the suggested driver (nvidia) shown in bold. Selected and installed the selected driver and rebooted. Now I have the same problem, booting hangs before KDE starts.

Is there a way to switch back to the other driver from recovery mode?

The WiFi device name is wlan1 but still haven't been able to connect. I'll double check my syntax.

You just need to

Code: Select all

rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia*
When you have a working system: make an image (with clonezilla) ;)

Have updated two of my solydk 64 installs using the update manager and both ended up with blue login backgrounds. When I login end up with blue background with white square in top left corner? If I choose Icewm or LXDE at login I still end up at same blue screen. Kde is all at newest version when I apt-get. Have tried many of commands youve post previosly but no go. Both system are running NVIDIA. I reinstalled over one and saved home and left it running nouveu driver and reran the up. It seems fine now but my main system stuck at giant blue desktop with terminal.

Yes I have run all those. I just found that if I run startx I get not authorized to run the X server, aborting. So I logged in as root and ran startx and got into LXDE?

I'm sorry, I don't have a clue what's going on with your machine.
I hope somebody else here can help you.

I've left my SokydK 64-bit updating today, but when I've came back the Update Manager window has shown a segmentation fault. I believe that it has happened when it was updating the package "libc6". The updating process has got interrupted, so I've tried to restart it. But it hasn't worked. So I've rebooted my machine. Then I've not been able to start a graphical session any more.

Thankfully I made a disk clone 2 weeks ago and I've been able to recover from it. Because I'm busy these days, I've preferred to choose the easy path. I'll try to update later and see if it happens again :/ .

Nvidia seems fine, so I tried apt-get install libegl1-mesa-drivers libegl1-mesa-drivers:i386 libc6 libc6:i386, apt-get install kdm kde-runtime kde-window-manager kde-workspace kde-baseapps kde-plasma-desktop. I don't use plymouth too much trouble in past after updates. Seems in a way to be some kind of permissions problem since I have to sudo startx or su and startx. But then I end up in LXDE not KDE I was able get my KDE login back. :?:

/var/log/apt/term.log

The update went fine, but there were some glitches. I saw the new version of the updatemanager. There was no other update visible. But when i tried to perform the update, some other packages were updated instead! ( libc6 and slibegl1-mesa-drivers i think) After that, i had to use dpkg --configure -a to continue. Updatemanager restarted, i saw the new version (again), installed it and after that everything worked as usual.

The latest update has gone wrong with me

Postby uranus » 10 Nov 2013 21:31

Hello,

My SolydK running on an SSD since several weeks. Because I symlinked my work in my home directory on an internal HDD and had no desire to surgically everything smooth to pull back again , I have just reinstalled SolydK .

It is expired as follows :

The update with the update management proceeded without errors. The subsequent restart but then does not work anymore. He stopped with an error message such as "unexpected disconnect from boot status daemon : startpar vmamqpd plymouth" . Then I tried the xserver by a second Terminal to start . It ended with "could not find insert nvidia-current " .

Now I would like to know what I can do or should not do, so that does not happen again .

Anyway, I've only once not installed Nvidia drivers and work sure to use the Nouveau driver , although the font rendering is not quite as good as with the proprietary driver.

friendly greetings

compress both files as tar.gz or zip or whatever other format you want and use the Upload attachment underneath the posting area.

Moved to the UP breakages thread.

Now that you reinstalled (if I understand correctly), we cannot investigate what went wrong, and try to find out how to prevent that from happening in the future. Correct me if I'm wrong.
