In the meantime I've successfully updated the kernel on several VMs, my main machine (Intel graphics) and the SolydX partition on my old laptop (turns out to have ATI graphics... ;) ). I have no means to test Nvidia and I'm uncertain whether simply updating the Nvidia tools woouldn't cause more problems than it would solve.

I really need some feedback here!

Thanks for the offer, but no thanks. I've already been thinking about putting a cheap card in another old machine I have here eventually, but that doesn't really solve the issue of this particular update (as I just don't have the time to spend on messing with hardware - very busy until at least mid August...).

All these will be updated through UpMan, right?

Thank you very much! I was wondering what to do with this lot.

I assume nvidia-modprobe and nvidia-graphics-modules (i.e. nvidia-kernel-amd64) were updated to 340.24 as well?

Thanks. I'll check which source packages those are from. For the security repo those bits have to be uploaded separately and missing one could get people into trouble.

Update went fine on my system also.

brent@solydx64-home:~$ inxi -SGxxx

GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Desktop
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.1.4 Direct Rendering: Yes
brent@solydx64-home:~$

One other thing...I upgrade my system from SolydX32 bit PAE to SolydX 64 and I had no issues really. I run the Liquorix kernel as the temps on my 4 cpu's run about 8 degree cooler and I have no video stuttering at all.

The latest nvidia related security updates stopped the Nvidia driver from working.

Using advice in this tutorial I was able to get the Nouveau driver going.
http://forums.solydxk.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2908
I've followed this tutorial a couple of times in the past but this time when I tried the second half of the to get the Nvidia driver going it failed again and I had to reinstall Nouveau.

DDM won't install Nvidia either. It just sits there for ages with the spinny round thing going which indicates something is happening but when I look at System Monitor the CPUs are idling and nothing is being downloaded.

Advice on how to get the Nvidia driver installed will be welcomed.
SolydK 64bit Home Edition.

Same here. Nvidia drivers keep working fine. Maybe it's because we are on legacy 304? Dou you have modern GPU?
This likely means that your installation is broken. -Mr Pixbuf.

I'm currently dist-upgrading SolydK BE to testing.
It removes plymouth-drm, and therefor debian-plymouth-manager, but the rest looks good.

***Edit: Oops, this is a bit hasty... First, See Schoelje's post below....

If /etx/X11/xorg.conf is missing, and you need to generate a new one:

When you get to the login prompt in your photo, go ahead and log in to robs-desktop as root using your root password.

Run

Code: Select all

# nvidia-xconfig
it will warn you that a new xorg.conf has been generated. then:

Code: Select all

# reboot
tell us what happens...

Make sure you have /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and that you have nouveau blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/

I have a symlink to /etc/alternatives/glx--nvidia-blacklists-nouveau.conf:

Code: Select all

# You need to run "update-initramfs -u" after editing this file.

# see #58089
blacklist nouveau
