SolydXK in Distrowatch!

Postby Arjen Balfoort » 27 Apr 2013 07:57

[This is a copy of the blog post: http://solydxk.nl/solydxk-in-distrowatch/]

SolydXK has been added to the Distrowatch database!

I think this is some sort of record (being added in just two months), and we can be very proud of the accomplishment.

The page is still a bit empty, but that’s going to change soon: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=solydxk

[EDIT]
Now that I think about it, how is the popularity ranked/counted?

Apparently by the number of visits. But i have always wondered about that. For example, my user agent String is

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:19.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/19.0

So how do they know what distro i use? Even more, the Linux Mint user agent declares itself as "Ubuntu"! So how do they distinguish Linux Mint from Ubuntu?

from distrowatch faq
The DistroWatch Page Hit Ranking statistics have attracted plenty of attention and feedback over the years. Originally, each distribution-specific page was pure HTML with a third-party counter at the bottom to monitor interest of visitors. In May 2004 the site switched from publicly viewable third-party counters to internal counters. This was prompted by a continuous abuse of the counters by a handful of undisciplined individuals who had confused DistroWatch with a poll station. The counters are no longer displayed on the individual distributions pages, but all visits are logged. Only one hit per IP address per day is counted.

The DistroWatch Page Hit Ranking statistics are a light-hearted way of measuring the popularity of Linux distributions and other free operating systems among the visitors of this website. They correlate neither to usage nor to quality and should not be used to measure the market share of distributions. They simply show the number of times a distribution page on DistroWatch.com was accessed each day, nothing more.

The figures in the third column of each table represent the average number of hits per day (HPD) for the specified period. The tables are updated daily at around 30 minutes past midnight GMT.

So, what they really count is how many times the various distro pages at distrowatch are visited per day per ip address.

Which means the 100 distros displayed on the first page, will always get more hits than any other.

We get a bit more accurate on our own stats (see the download counter on the product pages, but still it's not the info you need to know: how many systems are running SolydXK?
Without violating everybody's privacy, we'll have to do with estimates like these.

ZZ,
Mageia is above Ubuntu. Wow would have never thought that the spin off of Mandriva would reach that height.
Mandriva was where I started back with Linux. It was a great learning experience. It is where I ended up liking KDE over any other DE. Well I am glad I am here. I hope Solydxk never goes away like Mandriva did.
Thanks
Dan

I don't think there is a way without people volunteering the info, although I may be wrong about that. The Linux Counter does have distro stats available for their members/users, but they don't have SolydXK on their distro dropdown menu.

Congratulations to all!
I am also very happy with that.
More so because a couple of weeks ago, I had been writing to distrowatch politely asking them to do so.
Dear Ladislav,

I would like to invite you to have a look at the following new
distribution http://solydxk.nl/
It is a rolling Debian Testing release with either the KDE or XFCE desktop.
Some of the developers come from the Linux Mint Debian Edition team.

Thank you for considering adding this distro to your great list.

Yours sincerely,
I certainly do not want to claim any credit for this, but it might have helped.
All I want to say is that one should not refrain from a healthy amount of apostolicism.

I also wrote to Dedoimedo.com.
In his style, he briefly thanked me for the suggestion. If he takes it up that would be absolutely massive because as a blogger he has quite a following.
Dedoimedo wrote:
"... I am also planning to revive my eight-year old T42 laptop. It's a
32-bit machine with 1.5GB RAM, so hardly a cripple by any standards,
still it would be great to see how it can handle the latest operating
systems. Again, I was considering Xubuntu or maybe Lubuntu, but I would
appreciate your suggestions here."

Take SolydX for a spin. It is a rolling Debian distro with XFCE based on
Linux Mint Debian Edition. You will like it.

Regards,
Lastly, yesterday I was e-mailing back and forth with the Dutch maintainer of the isodoc package in LaTeX about a bug. He mentioned he was using Xubuntu. I told him very briefly about SolydX. Result: Yesterday evening he told me he had installed SolydX on his laptop. ...Speaking about a quick adoption rate!!! :D

Nice work, on4aa!

I've written to Dedoimedo as well (amongst others):
My todo list is superlong, if you can wait a few months, it might happen.

Thanks to all that spread the world and make it possible 8-)

I placed a link to http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=solydxk on the speed dial of my web browser. This will create a daily distrowatch hit from my PCs. 8-)

This is really good news  .

And I do think this is somewhat of a record... Honestly I don't have too much experience with how long it takes distros to get on distrowatch, but from what I have seen 2 months is extremely quick.

Looking forward to the increasing publicity 8-)

Well we're getting there :)

Obviously we won't be growing too fast in the 6 month or 1 year lists (since we've only been on distrowatch for a few days), but on the 1 month chart we've moved up to 242nd and on the 1 week chart we're up to 160th. Which is definitely progress 8-)

Edit: Thanks MAYBL8. We're actually 79th on the 1 week chart (160 views).
