Actually, they're not. They're from experimental, every single one of them. Sid and jessie still have 4.12.2-3 or 4.12.4-1.

But it's probably a good idea to use the same version as the main runtime...
It's the same version as kde4-runtime, kde4-workspace, etc, currently in testing:
Erm... <mode=smartass> there isn't even a kde-workspace 4.12 yet. </mode>. :geek:

Looks like the SolydXK testing branch is updated. Many updates available. I think the updates are ocurring as I update because I have already twice updated the update manager, now to version 2.2.7.

Some observations.

* The update manager system tray icon seemed stuck with the circular double arrow. In hindsight, I might have had another process running, such as Synaptic, and perhaps that causes the update manager to get stuck in that double circular arrow mode.

* The options in the update manager popup menu do not work. Nothing happens. Similarly, nothing happens when I open any of the update manager toolbar buttons. The catch? I was running as root. Seems the update manager is coded to provide limited response and usability when run directly as root rather than through gksu(do)?

* The SolydX boot splash abruptly stops when the system moves into run level 2, reverts to stdout, and stays that way until the DM is loaded.

* The login manager displays the LOCALE in the upper panel bar. I suppose some people want that information and some don't. I recall a remedy to not display that information in the LightDM config file but don't remember at the moment.

* When the login dialog appears, the SolydX logo is half-clipped at the bottom right of my screen. This is on a Thinkpad T400 laptop. Seems the full logo should be viewable.

* Not related to the updates, but the default Xfce mouse double-click interval is way too short. I am an older person and my fingers do not move as fast as rabbits copulating. I recommend a longer interval. I always found 700 ms adequate, even with KDE.

* Not related to the updates, but I have noticed the following problem in LMDE Mate and SolydX. Often when I start an app that requires the root password, the subsequent password dialog loses focus immediately. Of course, I start typing the password but I am not typing in the dialog, which causes unexpected results, depending upon which app actually has the focus. I suspect a GTK issue as this happens in LMDE too.

* Something in the update process keeps triggering the dialogs to install grub. Kind of irritating as my boot loader is controlled from a different distro on a different partition. I don't know of a nice way to stop the dialogs.

* My updating stalled with the rename 0.20.3 package. I had to kill the process and start anew. I recall the update process stalling the first time I installed SolydX. I don't know whether the updating actually completed and the update manager simply stopped updating the screen or whether the updating stalled. After a reboot running apt-get update/upgrade indicates the system is updated but I am wary.

* My mouse acts erractically when I run the update manager in SolydX. A wireless USB mouse. The mouse pointer movements get jerky. Otherwise the mouse pointer responds as expected.

If or when an official Update Pack thread is started, I can copy this post to the appropriate thread. :)

Edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf->show-indicators: delete ~language;.

Something is wrong with the mail-notification package. The package wants to pull way too many additional packages, including evolution. That never happened to me in LMDE.

The 'User management' tool:
* In the menu is not correctly cased (the 'm' should be upper case M)
* Displays no menu icon in Mate (the *.desktop file lists 'user-identity' as the icon)
* Does not appear in the Mate control center (cured by adding 'Settings;' to the desktop Categories

zerozero wrote:i still don't trust autoremove; yeahh, it depends on the system and what you have installed and what you uninstalled but as a quick example it removed baloo (just installed in the previous dist-upgrade)
Considering baloo only exists in experimental, that doesn't really surprise me... ;)

Code: Select all

p07@asus:~$ rmadison baloo
 baloo | 4:4.13.1-1 | experimental | source, amd64, armel, armhf, i386, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390x
Have those experimental packages been added to SolydXK's Testing repo yet? I suppose autoremove won't mess with them when they're in there.

Understanding that it's not yet ready for prime-time, I performed the update and encountered a major issue ... a slightly schizophrenic system with one foot in the sysvinit camp and one foot in the systemd camp:

Code: Select all

Info: Processes: 139 Uptime: 17 min Memory: 759.6/3964.4MB
           Init: SysVinit v: 2.88 runlevel: 2 default: 2 Gcc sys: 4.9.0 alt: 4.4/4.6/4.7/4.8
Client: Shell (bash 4.3.111 running in konsole) inxi: 2.1.28
Here's the sources.list (copied from the OP of this thread into my /etc/apt/sources.list):

Code: Select all

$ inxi -r
Repos: Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://packages.solydxk.com/testing/ solydxk main upstream import kdenext
deb http://debian.solydxk.com/testing testing main contrib non-free
           deb http://debian.solydxk.com/testing/multimedia testing main non-free
           deb http://debian.solydxk.com/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
           deb http://community.solydxk.com/testing/ solydxk main
On reboot after the dist-upgrade, got two or three screens of (this from /var/log/dmesg):

Code: Select all

[ 10.285737] udevd[749]: failed to execute '/lib/udev/socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event' 'socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event': No such file or directory
Recalling my play with systemd ( http://forums.solydxk.nl/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2114 ) I remembered that this is a symptom of systemd being installed and the two hal packages (hal, hal-info) not being removed.

Looking some more, I note that /etc/default/grub has not been updated to start systemd (per https://wiki.debian.org/systemd )

Also, per the Debian wiki, systemd-sysv has not been installed

Code: Select all

apt policy systemd-sysv
systemd-sysv:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 204-8
  Version table:
     204-8 0
        500 http://debian.solydxk.com/testing/ testing/main amd64 Packages

I had this too.

The system said it was in live environement...

Mind that you'll only use systemd when systemd-sysv is being installed.
I know that systemd is pulled in as a dependency, but this UP should not convert any system to use systemd instead of sysvinit.
I'll check tomorrow if I can update normally, and remove hal.
If for some reason, the installation is aborted, you indeed need to purge the live packages manually.

I am fully updated with SolydX testing repos.

I have never seen this bug before. When I "right click" on a link in Firefox, I am presented with a popup context menu that contains a few dozen choices, including things like Play, Pause, Mute, Show Statistics, Hide Statistics, Save Snapshot As, Copy Video Locations, Save Video As, Email Audio, etc.

I see the same wacky context menu when starting Firefox in safe mode.

Has anybody seen this before and knows the cause?

All concur with kde-runtime version in testing.
Does that make for a smoother update?

Running K64 in a VM:

The UM updated itself just fine. Attempting to use UM for the big one .... not so much. About 1/3 the way through the download, it would stall/freeze. Did this twice.

From the terminal, all went quite well.

I suppose autoremove won't mess with them when they're in there.
sorry for the delay guys/gals
yes, ballo is (and was at the time) part of the SolydXK's testing repos

The VM I upgraded today still has python-kde4 and kdepim-runtime on 4.12 (actually 4.12.2-3 and 4.12.4-2 respectively, the versions currently in Jessie). According to apt policy, this VM now has a mixture of 4.12 and 4.13 packages.
It looks like the VM didn't have the full PIM Suite installed. I'll try the same upgrade procedure again tomorrow, after first installing the Suite from kdenext.

trying to overwrite '/usr/share/kde4/services/okularMobi.desktop', which is also in package okular-extra-backends 4:4.12.4-90r0+b8
the 2 last problems were solved with -f install but looking closer at the output we can see that both are caused by file conflicts between the newly added 4.13 PIM KDE and the versions from kdenext.
probably grizzler's option above to identify, downgrade and then upgrade cleanly would be a better option.

EDIT to add:
after the upgrade and reboot everything seems (from a quick look&see) to be working fine;
the system was slow and busy for the first 10 min with baloo (re)indexing, after that time it calmed down but with occasional spikes like here

Re: UP - 01/07/2014 [TESTING]

I like downgrading, but I have some doubts about that.
  1. Which packages do we need to downgrade?
Doesn't that all depend on what is installed by the user?
  2. I probably can enforce a downgrade on a fixed set of packages with the UM, but how about those terminal users that simply run dist-upgrade?
As an alternative solution, we can also wait until all necessary files enter testing: postpone, or even cancel this UP.
