Install Fail - Where & How to put Grub?

Postby Happy Eagle » 22 Nov 2019 16:08

Hello, Trying to install SolydXK today, I was confronted with (from
memory) two choices regarding Grub.

1. Put it in a partition - a no no, since it should be 'on or in the
disk' instead.
2. Don't have a Grub - OS "may" not boot.

I would like to put it on/in the disk (vs a partition) but don't know
how to do that. I had unallocated space on my hard drive - somehow use
that? If so, how, using the installer provided?

Perhaps relevant:
- I don't have a functioning OS on a hard drive, only live disk.
- My hardware and firmware is 11 year old.
- I chose to not have a grub during the installation, went out after
files started downloading, and returned an hour and a half later to a
black screen. Used button on the box to try a reboot with no success.
Booted the live disk and now the GParted does not detect the Hard
Drive at all, nor does the BIOS (Boot Menu) detect it.

Here was my partitioning (visualize left to right as GParted image):
1 GB fat32 /dev/sda2 (primary)
30 GB ext4 BOOT flag .dev/sda3 (for Solydxk) (primary)
~115 GB unallocated
4 GB Linux Swap /dev/sda1 (primary)

Any suggestions re partitioning will be appreciated. (No plans to dual
boot. No windows.) Keep it simple please.

I think what I have to do to make the HDD "detectable" is unplug
everything from the box, unplug HDD power and data cables from the
motherboard, remove the CMOS battery, hold down the 'power on' button
for 15 seconds -- then put it back together again. I am only just
learning that firmware/kernel interactions seem to have been driving
me crazy for a couple months [3 HDDs, 2 1TB external USB drives, and a
bunch of thumbdrives]. Not to mention other factors that corrupt
superblocks (bad shutdowns, power surges and power failures, messing
about with 3rd party utilities ,,,)

I'm praying for an extended session with a functioning OS on a
harddrive so that I may begin untangling the mess.

So how do I do the Grub thing?

Thanks for your help and patience!

Grub: The installer starts up with sensible defaults. Leave grub where it is and don't choose any of those options. There is another option (which is checked by default) at the top which is the right one - on disk. This is easily overlooked - @Arjen: if you feel like it, there's room for improvement either in the tooltip or in the visual presentation.

Regarding blackscreen: Energy saving kicked in. That's actually not good. @Arjen - happened to me too but I forgot to report it. A lot of computers don't know how to wake up at this point.

Partitioning: Put /home on the unallocated space.

Not sure about your trouble with detecting the harddisk - I thought the installer saw it?

ilu. I am grateful for your reply. Thank you! Juggling a lot at the moment (4;30 AM!) and tired. Maybe later for more.

What do you suggest?

I can let live-installer run these commands at startup:

Code: Select all

if [ -x /usr/bin/xfce4-power-manager ]; then
    xfce4-power-manager -q
fi

xset -dpms
xset s noblank
xset s off
Do I need to do anything about SolydK?
I haven't heard any problems with that one.
