Find files on different partition

Postby maze » 19 Oct 2013 21:20

i am new to linux, i wanted to find a file which should be somehow available on my hard disk
it is on one of my partitions called /dev/sda5
even though i switched user to root the os still denies me permission to have a look at sda5

thats what i get in the console:

maze@shoelace ~ $ /dev/sda5
bash: /dev/sda5: Keine Berechtigung
maze@shoelace ~ $ su
Passwort:
shoelace maze # whoami
root
shoelace maze # /dev/sda5
bash: /dev/sda5: Keine Berechtigung
shoelace maze # ls -l /dev/sda5
brw-rw---T 1 root disk 8, 5 Okt 19 20:14 /dev/sda5

can anybody tell me why i dont have the right to access even though i am root, admin???

if i understand correctly what you want, this >> http://askubuntu.com/questions/116651/h ... when-searc might be the option.

/dev/sda5 is the name of the device. Of course, you have to mount the device, and ask for the mount name.
Please show the output of

Code: Select all

# mount -l
The message error is correct as there is no rwx as attributes. Not executable, therefore: "keine Berechtigung".

ok das bekomme ich beim mount output:
thats what i get when i type mount -l:

maze@shoelace ~ $ mount -l
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)
udev on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,relatime,size=10240k,nr_inodes=987254,mode=755)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,gid=5,mode=620,ptmxmode=000)
tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,size=791472k,mode=755)
/dev/disk/by-uuid/74f7439c-9bb0-440f-abe6-ff85c8424dc8 on / type ext4 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro,data=ordered)
tmpfs on /run/lock type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,size=5120k)
tmpfs on /run/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,size=4080460k)
fusectl on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw,relatime)
/dev/sda5 on /home type ext4 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro,data=ordered) [lager]
binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime)
cgroup on /dev/cgroup/cpu type cgroup (rw,relatime,cpu,release_agent=/usr/local/sbin/cgroup_clean)

it shows me that i have /dev/sda5 already mounted?? is this correct??
i tried to change the rights with with chmod as root, but it says i dont have access.

actually i want to know what files i got on /dev/sda5
but as a beginner i am simply akward.

maze

You show /dev/sda5 mounted on /home
To see the files you have to:

ls -l /home

not
ls -l /dev/sda5

thanks, problem solved, anyways

i found out i cant load the partition as directory in bash shell. well at least now i can get a look at the different files.
what i needed was the term cd=change directory. with df i did get to know the different directories. seems like i need to learn a lot of basic things. if anybody has a good link or a nice book for how to use bash or how to learn basic linux operations, every recommendation is appreciated.

When I read the OP I was wondering why I didn't see cd and I was going to go home tonight to actually try changing to a different directory without cd to see if it was possible (thought I had learnt something new :P)

Anyhow, there are many good resources on-line to learn the basics (up to the arcane) of the bash and you will soon find it comes naturally :)
