Have you looked in the waste bin? if it is there right click on it and click restore from the menu (at least that is in SolydX not sure if SolydK is different)

No, sadly, it is not there . . . and the bin hasn't been emptied either.

I think I right-clicked on the icon, one of the possibilities was Remove from screen, and my hand slipped !

hmh: Firstly, let me welcome you to SolydXK forums and I trust that you will enjoy using this great distro. If you would like to post in the "Introduce yourself" section it will be great to hear a bit more about who you are and how you got here!

What exactly do you mean by a "Solydx icon"?

Do you mean the "X Menu" icon on the panel at the bottom left of the screen which opens the Whisker Menu? If so, then you can right-click on a blank area of the bottom panel and select "Panel" > "Add New Items". Type "Whisker" in the search box and select "Whisker Menu" then hit the "Add" button.

If you then right-click on the resulting panel icon, you can move this back to your preferred location.

I don't know the Whisker Menu . . .

We are using Solydx, as opposed to Solydxk, I think ?

It was an ( blue and orange ? ) icon with Solydx on it, probably the Menu ?

Without it I can't, for example, use the scanner ?

As you can see we are not Techies . . .

Yep, will introduce ourselves, should have done that first . . .

Many thanks, you are most kind !

hmh: So, have you tried to add the menu back as I described above?

Don't worry - you don't need to be Techies! Many answers are already here on the forums so a quick search can often be worthwhile. However, if you can't find the answer to a problem then just ask. We are a friendly bunch here! :-)

Zill, I have, but it didn't give me the options that you said it would, so I wonder if we have a different version ?

If you have installed SolydX main edition, which has the XFCE desktop, I am running the same system.

Please see a screenshot of my system below which shows the process I described earlier...

Ok, when I right click as suggested I get:

Add applets to panel
Panel settings
Themes
All settings
Troubleshoot
Modify panel
Panel edit mode ( this one is followed by a 0 or a i )

hmh: To allow us to check exactly which versions of software you are running, please hit Ctrl-Alt-t to open a terminal. Then enter the following commands (each one followed by the Enter/Return key):

Code: Select all

uname -a
cat /etc/debian_version
lsb_release -a
apt policy xfce4
Then highlight all the resulting text to copy it to the clipboard and then paste it back to a new reply in this thread.

In order to make the output easily readable on the forums, please enclose output in "code" tags. e.g.

Code: Select all
my output text
Note that there is a "Code" button at the top of the forum editing window which does this automatically for any highlighted text.

As your system showed "Add applets to panel", if you click on this can you see a similar screen to my "Add New Items" screen above?

hmh: From the information you have posted, it seems that you are running Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa, rather than SolydX.

Linux Mint Rosa is based on Ubuntu, while SolydX is based on Debian so these are totally different operating systems. Additionally, Linux Mint uses either the Mate or Cinnamon desktop environments (DE), while SolydXK uses either the XFCE (SolydX) or KDE (SolydK) DEs.

This explains why your Mint system looks and behaves totally different to my SolydX system!

If you actually want to replace your Mint system with SolydX, then this is possible by booting your system with a SolydX ISO, either burnt to a DVD or to a USB stick. Then, if you start SolydX as a live session, you will see a SolydX desktop and SolydX will run directly from the DVD or USB. Note that, at this stage, no changes will be made to your hard disk drive.

If everything seems to be working OK and you want to install SolydX to your HDD, you should see a SolydX icon on the desktop which will start the installation process. However, please note that this will destroy all data currently on the disk so please ensure that any data you wish to keep is safely backed up elsewhere.

With hindsight, maybe this was the "SolydX icon" your initial post referred to? If so, please appreciate that this icon appeared as a result of running the SolydX live session, which disappears when the machine is shutdown or rebooted. You will need to start the live session again to see the SolydX desktop and the install icon.

How strange.

The system was installed by the shop we bought the desktop from, run by a Dutchman, he knew we were used to Ubuntu, and thought Solydx would be easier for us than the classic version.
By removing the icon, I can't have removed Solydx, can I ? Surely not.

Will wait till I can get in touch with him, but thankyou for all your kind help. At least I now know the commands to discover which system we are running !

HNY !

If it doesn't work out with the shop, and you're living in the south of Holland, send me a Private Message (PM) and we'll see what we can do.

whiskermenu need to be installed before we could add it to the panel. whisker is a new addition to xfce and not available as default on older xfce (4.10 and below). solydx was an exception. we were based on debian testing and many user love whisker. thus, we decided to use whisker earlier than other distro.

I don't know if whisker available on mint but if whisker not available, the old menu should still available. you can use the old menu or install whisker.... or get a new iso and install a genuine solydx to enjoy full experience of solydxk.

I don't really want to change anything, just put back the icon I removed, which allowed access to the Graphics for instance . . . just want to use the scanner.

hmh: I am still confused about what your mystery SolydX icon actually did! :?

From the info you posted, your system is running Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa. There is no reason why a SolydX icon (or anything else relating to SolydX) should be present on this installed Mint system.

If, instead of Mint, you actually had SolydX installed then you would have had the XFCE Whisker menu installed and this would have listed your main applications, such as graphic settings and scanners etc.

However, as you do not have SolydX installed, your Mint system should have a Mint menu available (with similar functionality) which will allow you to run your installed applications, such as graphics settings and scanners etc. You do not need SolydX on your Mint system to run these applications.

If you cannot see or use the Mint menu then I suggest you may like to repost in the Mint forums, posting the same terminal output you posted here so that the Mint users can see exactly what you are running. You should also advise which Mint Desktop Environment you are running. e.g. Mate or Cinnamon.

Hi Zill,
I am hoping the chap who installed it will be able to help, after the holidays.

I could go on the Mint Forum, or maybe the Debian Forum, as apparently we are running Debian Jessie ?

Cheers, and thanks again !
