Shutdown reboot not working from XFCE menu

Postby c.monty » 16 Feb 2020 16:47

Hi,
since upgrade to Debian Buster I cannot shutdown / reboot the system from XFCE menu.
This means after pressing the relevant button nothing happens.

When I try to shutdown / reboot one more time, I get this error (see attachment).

Please advise how to fix this error.

Check the output of

Code: Select all

journalctl -b -p err
cat ~/.xsession-errors
.xsession-errors can be huge - cut off the part that's not immediately before the shutdown.

Is this a freshly installed system? If not: This issue can have a lot of causes. A process is still running, maybe because it hangs in a loop or it can't save for whatever reason. The english message is "Session manager must be in an idle state before requesting shut-down" - you'll need to search.

Hi,
I have found a workaround to shutdown (or reboot) the PC:
XFCE-Menu > Changes User > Shutdown

Please check the attached screenshot for details.

Therefore I think there's no general error with the system, but this specific error with XFCE-Menu > Logout (see screenshot).
What I understand is that this is the relevant program: xfce4-session-logout

Can you please advise how to continue analysis?
I added debug file of command
strace -o /tmp/debug_xfce4-session-logout xfce4-session-logout --reboot

I cannot advise on anything if you don't answer my questions. I don't think there is something wromg with xfce4-session-logout. It works correctly for everybody else and it works correctly on your system too: Some process hangs on your system and is blocking shutdown.
That's why I wanted to see the output of

Code: Select all

journalctl -b -p err
cat ~/.xsession-errors
That's also why I asked whether this is a newly installed system - I can see from your screenshots that it's not. Especially I see flashpeak slimjet which is obviously installed from some unknown source. Anything else installed from other sources? Whether it has anything to do with the error or not I can't say without the output I required.

Whatever workaround you found I don't know, your screenshots don't tell me anything.
