[SOLVED] laptop brightness

Postby plaircpa » 07 May 2014 16:59

I've got a new install on an older HP 6530b laptop. It has intel graphics and uses the i915 driver. I would like to have the screen brightness stay at 100% when the power cord is plugged in or unplugged. It looks like the screen is getting dimmed to about 80% or so when the power is plugged in or unplugged. I can't seem to find a setting for this. Is there a way to make that happen?

thanks much folks.

I believe this is controllable through the power settings. I'm not at my SolydX install right now, but try looking under Settings or right-click on the battery icon. Then check the settings under the Monitor tab for both the On AC and On Battery sections.

on SolydK:

System Settings --> Power Management --> Energy Saving

you will have tabs on the top for On AC Power, On Battery and On Low Battery and should be able to set them all how you want them.

SolydXK is such a delicious flavor of Debian!

Did some looking around and found a script to put in /etc/pm/power.d

case "${1}" in
true) #battery_mode
xinput set-int-prop 12 277 8 2 3 0 0 1 3 2
cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
;;
false) #ac_mode
xinput set-int-prop 12 277 8 2 3 0 0 1 3 2
cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
esac

Works well so far and hasn't interfered with othe power settings. I found it on a Ubuntu site and modified it a bit. Just needed to make it executable.

The system settings appear to be missing the desired brightness when on battery or AC. For my case it appeared there was a predefined setting after plugging/unplugging the laptop of roughly 70% on AC and 50% on battery. I couldn't find where these were, but too dim for my tastes.

thanks all.
