Network Manager Applet Disappeared

Postby freecicero » 03 Jul 2014 02:08

Today for some reason I cannot figure my Network Manager applet disappeared. I am connected to my wireless so that's OK, but the Icon that would let me choose other networks has disappeared. The other icons SEEM to be OK - the update manager appears and sound -- but the network manager is mysteriously gone.

Any suggestions?

Thanks very much.

Here's my output from that. Thanks for any suggestions! I should add that I am posting from this machine wirelessly now, but the applet remains gone. Gee I did not realize this had a 2005 CPU. Almost ten years old, but I hate to throw it out quite yet.

check whether if nm-applet is running by "ps -A |grep applet" if it not running you can try to run "nm-applet" from terminal to see what happened with nm-applet

Wow. Running the first command produces NO result. (And checking in LXTASK to look for it shows nothing either.

Running nm-applet from the terminal says

~$ ps -A |grep applet
~$ nm-applet
bash: nm-applet: command not found

and it does not seem possible to apt-get install nm-applet.

What should I try next? THANKS!

Sorry - it looks like I tried the wrong command:

:~$ ps -eaf | grep nm-applet
18566 18468 0 20:35 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --colour=auto nm-applet
~$

also: ps -eaf | grep NetworkManager | grep -v NetworkManagerDispatcherroot 3612 1 0 Jul06 ? 00:00:07 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager
root 17991 3612 0 20:25 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/dhclient -d -sf /usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-dhcp-client.action -pf /var/run/dhclient-wlan0.pid -lf /var/lib/NetworkManager/dhclient-47ee103b-7f08-4767-b029-be45256c12ea-wlan0.lease -cf /var/lib/NetworkManager/dhclient-wlan0.conf wlan0
lmh 18573 18468 0 20:36 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --colour=auto NetworkManager

( I got those commands from here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... +bug/43379 )

I am using the machine and it's wireless seems to be working fine - but no NM applet in the tray.

I also tried to tell Synaptic to reinstall network-manager. The reinstall seems to have taken place, but upon reboot -- still working wirelessly, but no applet in the tray or appearing in the LXTask list.

nm-applet packaged as network-manager-gnome. you can check it by

Code: Select all

dpkg -l |grep network-manager-gnome

Thank you! I installed network-manager-gnome using synaptic and my icon is back. Apparently something stupid I did, but I can't remember what. Anyway all is well that ends well so thank you!
