Unable to enable sound. (Solved)

Postby rozen » 27 Apr 2013 15:43

I have just installed Soldx64 and have gotten most stuff to work. BUT I have not been able to enable sound. I have installed audacious and it seems to be working in the sense that it is going thru my playlist and the bar graph at the bottom is giggling all over the place. When I go into the volume control the playback tab indicates activity in the bar at the bottom and the mute button appears to turn that off and on. When I try to execute xfce4-mixer, the gui flashes on and immediately dies with a segmentation fault.

VLC can play a DVD and show me the video output but again no sound output.

Below is the output from inxi-Fxx:

inxi -Fxx

Any suggestions would be very welcome as this is a show stopper for me.

I am running on a Dell XPS 410 tower with 4GB Memory.

Thanks in Advance,
Don

hi rozen 8-)
welcome to solydxk and let's see if we can solve that sound issue so that yo can enjoy the system fully ;)

please share the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -Axx
and also check our database (here >> http://forums.solydxk.nl/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=137) to see if your card is listed there and a fix found.

Hi,

Thanks for your rapid response.

The output you asked for is:

inxi -Axx
Audio: Card Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller driver snd_hda_intel BusID: 00:1b.0
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.24

I looked in the data base you mentioned and found my card right at the top. However, when I looked at /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base I found that the recommended line:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

was already in the file.

2 things you can try:
- change

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=auto
for

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=generic
reboot and check sound

====
on both situations run

Code: Select all

alsamixer
in the terminal and make sure the levels are all up.

Hi,

Thanks again for you rapid response! I now have it working.

When I invoked alsamixer there was only one vertical bar labeled "Master" showing. That didn't look right so I reread the database link you provided and followed the instructions for removing the plusaduio stuff. Then my alsamixer window displayed an array of vertical bars. I played around for a while with the result that when I "unmuted" the bar labeled "Front" I got sound!! With audacious, xine, vlc, and Firefox.

So it looks like I will pushing ahead with other setup.

Thanks So Much for Your Help,

Don
