videoconfig -solved

Postby mistergil » 28 Nov 2016 01:52

I've managed to kill my user mistergil video config (playing around) and am unable to get myself back due to an out of range monitor notification.
I am able to access as root normally but when attempting to login in as mistergil get the out of range notification. Using the cntrl-alt-backspace it escapes and root show the correct display configuration. There also doesn't appear to be an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file so I think it is probing at each startup. Any help would be appreciated.

I suggest you could try the following...

If you can use your mistergil account then open a terminal and backup the XFCE user config file as follows:

Code: Select all

cp ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml_bak

Then remove this mistergil config file:

Code: Select all

rm ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml

Logout and login again and this should recreate the XFCE display defaults.

If you cannot use your mistergil account then you will need to use the root account so open a terminal and backup the XFCE user config file as follows:

Code: Select all

cp /home/mistergil/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml_bak

Then remove this mistergil config file:

Code: Select all

rm /home/mistergil/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml

Logout and login again and this should recreate the XFCE display defaults.

As a final sanity check, make sure that both the original (_bak) file and the new config file have the same permissions:

Code: Select all

ls -l /home/mistergil/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/ | grep displays
