Virtualbox 5.2.10 and SolydX graphics issues

Postby Arjen Balfoort » 30 Apr 2018 18:51

Now it's my time to have a question :D

Virtualbox guest packages have been updated to version 5.2.10 (5.2.10-dfsg-6~bpo9+1). Whenever I boot a SolydX ISO in VB, the screen ends up garbled:
Screenshot_20180430_204158.png
I can only fix this by booting with the nomodeset boot parameter or insert Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and login the SolydXK Live User.

SolydK just boots fine and so does the SolydX 201801 ISO with the older guest packages.

Did somebody else encounter this issue and even have a fix/workaround for it?

[EDIT]
Current nightly has the VB 5.2.10 guest packages: https://downloads.solydxk.nl/nightly/so ... 201804.iso

I thought I'd do a quick check with the latest nightly, but that doesn't appear to have the latest guest additions. Is there a more recent ISO available somewhere?

I just uploaded them: https://downloads.solydxk.nl/nightly/so ... 201804.iso

No problems here with the SolydX ISO in a VB 5.2.10 on Buster.

I don't have an up-to-date Stretch installation here right now. I'll see if I can get one of the test machines updated quickly tomorrow.

If you don't have any problems, it might be my PC's graphics.

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card: Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
           bus-ID: 00:02.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.2 drivers: modesetting (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
           Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Haswell Desktop
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 13.0.6 Direct Rendering: Yes
I couldn't find anything related on the net.

Note to myself: check if this is relevant:

Code: Select all

Un-friggin-believable... Main test machine's processor doesn't have VT-x support so creating a 64-bit VM is out. I'll have to use my main machine. Feasible, but not without some serious preparation (I used to have lots of partitions on my main machines, but then I started using VBox...).
Arjen Balfoort wrote:...it might be my PC's graphics.
Possible, but then it must be in relation to the OS version, because...

Code: Select all

p07@asus /data/onderzoek $ inxi -Gx
Graphics:
Card-1: Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics
  driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0
  Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa
  resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Haswell Desktop v: 4.5 Mesa 17.3.9
  direct render: Yes
Same one in my main machine.

I don't think that Xorg log bit is relevant, by the way. I get the same on the SolydX ISO when it's starting OK on Buster.

It might be that the maintainer of the backports packages were compiled on Buster. Today I'll try to downgrade the guests packages in an ISO and see if that works.

As expected: only downgrading the guest packages in the ISO won't work. The vbox kernel module is not loaded. You probably need to downgrade dkms as well. Haven't figured that out yet.

I'm doubting whether it's worth the effort.

Just for the record, as I was upgrading one of the spare partitions on my main machine to use for this test, I noticed the Dutch mirror didn't have the most recent VBox set. It's still on 5.1.30-dfsg-1~bpo9+1 and as we're well into 5.2 now, I wondered what else was out of date. It looks like the mirror hasn't been updated for several weeks... :(

Just ran the 30 April SolydX ISO in a 5.2.10 VM on a stretch installation without issues... :?

So, it's my machine then...it's okay, I know the workaround.

That odd. If I run this command rsync gets the files. Could you try it as well (just stop if you see the first files coming):

Code: Select all

mkdir tmp; rsync -avz --delete repository.solydxk.com::repository/ ./tmp/

No, the newer files simply aren't available in the Dutch mirror. Just compare these pages:
Main: http://repository.solydxk.nl/pool/import/v/virtualbox/
Mirror: http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/soly ... irtualbox/

Same for other packages, e.g. solydxk-system:
http://repository.solydxk.nl/pool/main/ ... xk-system/
http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/soly ... xk-system/

I have now switched to the main repo. The new .nl server is more than fast enough. The old server could be extremely slow at times, so I always used the mirror.

Do you intend to keep the NLUUG mirror?

None of the mirrors are synchronized. That's why I wondered why I could rsync with the above command and the mirrors cannot.

I suspect that my IP is white listed or something, although I don't know how. That's why I asked you to run the command and see if you can rsync or not.

Indeed, NLUUG is not needed anymore. Now we could use a US mirror.

Ah, I see. I ran the command sequence and it worked. So other IPs can access through rsync as well.

Okay, thanks for checking. I'll contact the mirror maintainers tomorrow.
