Only boots to Grub Prompt after Buster GRUB (Solydx-ee) update

Postby cheetahws » 22 Jun 2019 05:24

I have 2 computers Computer 1 is a dual boot solydx and Windows 10 system. Computer 2 is a laptop that just runs solydx. Both are UEFI boot, secure boot is off and fastboot disabled.
They bath are dong the same thing and I have been trying to fix it for 2 weeks now so now I am here because it is way beyond me at this point.
After the GRUB update both computers only boot to the grub prompt. Not rescue but the regular prompt. grub>

if I run the "set" command it appears that the prefix on both computers is wrong.
Computer1 prefix=(hd0,gtp1)/boot/grub it should be prefix=(hd0,gpt2)/EFI/solydx
root=(hd0,gtp1) root should be root-(hd0,gtp2)

Computer2 prefix=(hd0,gtp1)/EFI/Debian it should be prefix=(hd0,gtp1)/EFI/solydx

Now if I run "set prefix=X" and "set root=X" (X=above commands) then run the "insmod normal" then "normal" the grub menu loads just fine.
So I am pretty sure this is just a pointer issue that I have no clue how to fix.
It is annoying to have to do this on every reboot.

booting and installing grub doesn't change anything
updating grub doesn't fix it.
installing grub from solydx-EE ISO doesn't fix it
deleting the entry with efibootmgr and installing grub doesn't fix it.
These are the only answers I seem to find online in debian, ubuntu, arch, mint, ect forums.

How do make the prefix and root location changes permanent?
I would prefer not to reinstall if I don't have to.

You can upload files in this forum, just scroll down and you see the "attachments" tab. That's easier for people who don't use google (like me).

You did not forget to issue "sudo update-grub" after fixing grub, right? (I know I did before.)

I managed to solve my grub problems (viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7468&p=69652#p69652) permanently with efibootmgr. It should save your changes. If it doesn't the problem is somewhere else, usually in firmware.
Check your EFI settings - anything there that prevents changes?

See https://superuser.com/questions/1166398 ... ter-reboot (adapt carefully because the guy there uses Win). A search for "efibootmgr doesn't save changes" turns up a lot of similar problems, usually firmware-related.

The pic was too big to upload, I did try.
I will give some of those a shot. I already updated my BIOS last week when this started. I will try to reset the BIOS later in the week when I have some time.
Thank you for the suggestions.

So none of those fixed the issue. But I did make a folder on the EFI partition called debian and just copied the filed from the solydx folder into it and now it is booting up just fine.
copy all files from /boot/efi/EFI/solydx to /boot/efi/EFI/debian
not sure why it wants that folder but it is working. Not sure what file it wants yet but I think it is looking for the grub.cfg
I need both folders because I tried to rename the solydx folder and then it wouldn't boot at all. Renamed it back with a live USB and it boots again.
Either way it is working again. :D

Arjen, could that have something to do with our usage of signed packages from debian? Makes sense if it does. Although he says he had secure boot off ... I'm wondering.

Did anybody test secure booting SolydXK on EFI yet? I know I have only non-EFI systems to test on.

cheetahws, which ISO did you use? The regular one or one from the nightlies?

I installed SolydK 10 (nightly build) and as expected, it installs grubx64.efi in /boot/efi/EFI/solydxk10/

So that's good. If it was the Feb ISO, it can't have anything to do with secure boot. Weird issue but good that you managed to get it to work.
