how to run command at startup or as icon on desktop?

Postby arjay » 30 Nov 2013 16:59

Hi all

I have just set up a vpn account with openbook/vpnbook which works fine. However, each time I log on I have to open a terminal and run

Code: Select all

sudo openvpn --config downloads/vpnbook/vpnbook-uk1-tcp443.ovpn --auth-user-pass downloads/vpnbook/vpn-login &
(vpn-login is my own text file that contains the user name and PW)

This is a right pain in the proverbial. I have saved the command as a text file on the desktop so at least I can cut and paste it each time into a terminal. However, what I would like to do is have the command run at start up, or alternatively at least have an icon on the desktop that lauches a terminal and runs the command.

I have googled until my eyes are square but can't find anything which is obviously helpful or a straightforward guide

Anyone help me here

Thnx

I would be interested in this topic as well. I have a current need to run a command with sudo at startup.
Thanks

Afraid I don't know about such scripts, but perhaps a look in System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Autostart could help. That appears to offer a way to run scripts and/or desktop files at login if that would work for your needs.

You can add a command to /etc/rc.local which should solve your problem.

Many thanks - on the road at the moment but will give it a try when I get home (10 days)
