New Kicker Menu

Postby vtpoet » 15 Jan 2014 01:00

So, my other fav distro, Netrunner released their latest today. One of the sweeter features is the new kicker menu.

http://www.netrunner-os.com/

Which is available through a PPA here:

https://launchpad.net/~blue-shell/+archive/homerun

Think you guys could package this for SolydK? Hmmm?

Oh I like that. Very nice. That is what the kickoff menu should have been right from the start. In some ways it looks more like a very clean and updated version of the classic menu than the kickoff. But it has the nice features of kickoff. Classic layout with all the kickoff goodness. I predict this menu is going to be a big hit.

I hope that Solyd can include this in the repos. If it proves reliable I think I would prefer this menu over anything else I've seen for KDE.

You can get a good look at the menu if you pause this video at 30sec.

Here you go. I found a still shot at netrunner mag. http://netrunner-mag.com/?p=3588
The biggest issue I see with this menu is according to the article above, searches only search application name and not description. Which makes it less practical for a new linux user who may not know the name of the program he wants but knows a description. But its still something to keep an eye on. I'd like to see kde actually pick up development of this to replace the classic menu.

Doing a little research on this. I found another video that shows a little more.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... j1qexCXju4

I previously missed that this is called Kicker and KDE 4 uses Kickoff. I also didn't realize that KDE3 menu was called Kicker. So now I wonder, is this actually a KDE.org menu that is making its debut in Netrunner? Doesn't BlueSystems/Netrunner employ one of the KDE developers? At first I thought it was an Netrunner inhouse project, but now I'm really curious if we will in fact see this as a replacement for the classic menu as I was just thinking above. More research to follow.

Kicker was created by the Netrunner developers.

Look here:

http://linuxg.net/how-to-install-homeru ... using-kde/

The article is incorrect however. According to the packages listed at the PPA, Kicker is only available for 13.10. Characteristically, Netrunner is a touch cagey about sharing its little innovations. They want users to install Netrunner.

Did you notice the "Expanding Taskbar" feature? Kind of cool, though I'm not sure what it adds. How is that an improvement over clicking? But slick as a greased pig.

I missed the expanding icon thing. I had to watch it several times. It looks like right at the begginning in the first few secons the icons get bigger. Kind of cool, but I'm not sure if its a real benefit or not.

i would think Lancelot with its many features would be the perfect menu for Solyd BE or any KDE version really.

It sure beats the standard KDE menu from my perspective :D

Yes it is, am using it, and nice to have as an option. Kicker looks sweet too. Would love to try it in Solyd. :-)

Yep +1 also to give Kicker a try in SolydK.

As found Lancelot to Wide and Bulky for my taste.
And prefer searchbar on the bottom and Left panel icons being thin and small as possible.

Weird thing and can't fine the solution. Is the regular KDE menu can be resized grabbing the top right corner.
And resizing the whole menu down. The only problem is doesn't stay or stick between sessions.
And have delved into the issue is a bug? or something needs manual editing of a config somewhere?

Yes, Netrunner is an EXCELLENT :) linux distro but for someone like me who has a netbook with only 1 Gb an dlike KDE, I've found SolydK :D and stick with it.

I was a Netrunner fun, in fact I still am, but working in a netbook with it can be tricky :? ... but working in a netbook with SolidK it's amazing!! :D And I run some "heavy" software...

Any way, after discovering SolidK I elected it as my TOP distro...

I hope that SolidK will be around for the forthcoming years... and Netrunner too.

Hi PRafael, I don't think any of us were recommending that you switch to Netrunner. :-)

We just think the Kicker menu is kinda' cool. It's probably a much lighter menu if you're running a tight system.

Just tried it, and ran into the following:

There are the errors. Maybe this has something to do with my already having installed plasma-widget-homerun? Dunno... This is still a touch above my pay grade. Edit: Looks like its trying to overwrite a newer version of the library?

that might be the problem, i didn't have homerun installed.
have you tried just installing the plasma-widget-homerun-kicker.deb file

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i plasma-widget-homerun-kicker_1.1.0+git20140123+r704~c4f3a22+3~ubuntu13.10.1_amd64.deb

Re: New Kicker Menu

Yeah, that's the first thing I did. I got the following:
Selecting previously unselected package plasma-widget-homerun.
(Reading database ... 207596 files and directories currently installed.)

Preparing to unpack plasma-widget-homerun_1.1.0+git20140123+r704~c4f3a22+3~ubuntu13.10.1_amd64.deb ...

trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/homerunviewer', which is also in package homerun 0.2.3-1
dpkg-deb: error: subprocess paste was killed by signal (Broken pipe)

Selecting previously unselected package plasma-widget-homerun-kicker.
Preparing to unpack plasma-widget-homerun-kicker_1.1.0+git20140123+r704~c4f3a22+3~ubuntu13.10.1_amd64.deb ...
Unpacking plasma-widget-homerun-kicker (1.1.0+git20140123+r704~c4f3a22+3~ubuntu13.10.1) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of plasma-widget-homerun-kicker:
plasma-widget-homerun-kicker depends on libhomerun0 (= 1.1.0+git20140123+r704~c4f3a22+3~ubuntu13.10.1); however:
Package libhomerun0 is not installed.

dpkg: error processing package plasma-widget-homerun-kicker (--install):

Errors were encountered while processing:

plasma-widget-homerun-kicker
So, based on the latter error message, I next tried to install the libhomerun0 library, and received the error already posted above. I tried sudo apt-get -f install and the following was the result:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
plasma-widget-homerun-kicker

So, I removed kicker. The solution is probably straightforward... don't have time to really concentrate on it at the moment. :|

Cool! Gonna' try it. Just started watching it. Compiling from source... duh. Why didn't *I* think of that. But then it would confirm everything Loverock Davidson (notorious Windows shill/troll at ZDNet) has ever said about how Linux users have to compile everything... ;)

to use smackthepony debs you need to purge first solydxk's homerun
btw they installed clean (after this workaround here 8-) well done)

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge homerun
and then, yes, you can install the 4 debs with

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i *deb
(assuming that you don't have any other deb in that folder)

otherwise it will give those overwrite errors

Code: Select all

And thanks zerozero. I just saw your post but already deduced that I needed to remove homerun. :D The only remaining question is this: Should we hash out the PPA from our source.list? I went ahead and hashed them out, but Linux4unme doesn't mention it.
