Man, knowing that I can use PPAs without borking my system just totally changes my worldview.

yeahh :) i think it's the best approach.
you're not getting automatic updates from there, if a new version of the app is added to the PPA you need to compile it again so it's safer to comment it out.

Okay, for the next one who stumbles on this thread. Here are my notes (to compliment the video):

Example: Kicker Menu

https://launchpad.net/~blue-shell/+archive/homerun

1.) Add to apt sources list:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
And add the following to sources.list:

(The other two versions of ubuntu don't yet have kicker.)

2.) Add gpg key:

Use numbers after forward slash in Signing Key.
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 6AE1EE0F
3.) Update apt-get:
sudo apt-get update
4.) To confirm it is available to apt-get.
aptitude search plasma-widget-homerun-kicker
5.) To show which repository it is available in.
apt-cache policy plasma-widget-homerun-kicker
6.) To compile.
apt-get source -b plasma-widget-homerun-kicker
7.) To see the built deb files. In this case:
ls
You should see something like:

plasma-widget-homerun-kicker_1.1.0+git20140123+r704~c4f3a22+3~ubuntu13.10.1_amd64.deb

8.) Make the relevant deb executable:
chmod +x plasma-widget-homerun-kicker_1.1.0+git20140123+r704~c4f3a22+3~ubuntu13.10.1_amd64.deb
9.) Then install:
sudo dpkg -i plasma-widget-homerun-kicker_1.1.0+git20140123+r704~c4f3a22+3~ubuntu13.10.1_amd64.deb
If there are dependence issues, make sure to install from wheezy:
sudo apt-get -t wheezy install <dependency>
Corrected. See comment below. Change to:

Code: Select all

apt-get -t testing install <dependency>
10.) Hash out PPA in sources.list:

# deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/blue-shell/homerun/ubuntu quantal main
# deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/blue-shell/homerun/ubuntu quantal main
Linux Reap what you tweak.

tks for the notes :)

just 2 observations
8.) you don't need to make the debs executable, it won't hurt i guess but it's unnecessary: they will install as-is
If there are dependence issues, make sure to install from wheezy:
this is an adaptation that needs to be done regarding the YT video: linux4unme is using stable (wheezy) we are using testing (jessie);
this syntax should be adapted to

Code: Select all

apt-get -t testing install <dependency>

I edited my comment. Guess you don't have strikethru? Or I don't know the code...

it's not implemented as a custom BB code in the board.

Huh. Since Kicker isn't available for Raring; and since I run Netrunner/Raring, thought I'd use the same method as above to compile Kicker for Raring.

Enabled the Saucy repositories just long enough to compile from source.

Only dependency I had to add from Saucy was libhomerun0. So, crossed my fingers and added it. So far, it's worked like a charm.

What could possibly go wrong. Right?

that's where i compiled kicker menu and homerun from in the first place
The buntu repo from my sources.list...

Code: Select all

#Kicker Menu developed bu Netrunner
#deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/blue-shell/homerun/ubuntu saucy main
#deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/blue-shell/homerun/ubuntu saucy main

Not likely to be soon, since it's only running for 1 day now, but that will be decided by the maintainers.
But at least you can build it yourself now :D
If you're running 64 bits grab Debs
Purge your homerun install should you have 1 (see ZeroZero's post)
and install it with dpkg (see vtpoet's post)
Or take the fun route and compile it from scratch (see vtpoet's post as well)

Ahhh interesting read. So it looks like this is more than just a Netrunner project. Good. I thought it might be. I also was glad to see in the 'Future Plans' section that they are considering replacing the 'Classic Menu' with a derivative of this new kicker. That was my first thought when I saw it. I think good things are coming KDEs way.
