Can't change KDM "GUI Style"

Postby vtpoet » 07 Apr 2014 20:16

I've been experimenting with KDM. I managed to change the background, but KDE seems to ignore any change/option I make or choose as far as the GUI Style or Color Scheme goes. In other words, no matter what GUI Style or Color Scheme I choose, under System Settings --> Login Screen (General Tab), I always get the same Oxygen GUI?

Hmmm... I've been googling this and it seems that this is a "bug"?

Thanks Hubsi, the site you linked looks like it's instructions for installing a desktop, "GUI" environment, after a base Debian installation -- not quite what I'm looking for but thank you. I'm just trying to change the GUI greeter in KDM.

I've found an ugly workaround which is to edit one of the pre-made themes. It's a bit touch and go since I don't know squat about XML, but I'm doing okay. I've managed to change the background of "circles" and get rid of the flower. I haven't figured out how to change the little box that displays which user is logging in.

Thanks Frobozsky. The link didn't help. This seems to be a different issue? I've noticed, additionally, that new themes don't show up in the Theme tab of System Settings|Login Scree. There's something very buggy going on.

I'm still Googling this issue, but my impression is that KDE's KDM Manager is utterly dysfunctional. :|

But I'm not sure.

I've been using KDE for a while now in a few different distros and havent' had any issue like this.
The only thing I noticed is that to change the Login Theme I have to start system settings with
sudo systemsettings then I can download and apply a Login theme.
The appearance changes have always worked.
Are you using SolydK?

And....... thank you for that workaround.

Yes, indeed, if one knows the workaround, then it works quite well. :roll:

I too just discovered this flaw. My workaround, not as elegant, was to download the themes manually, then install them from the download folder. This invoked the necessary permissions.

However, I still can't change the GUI Style. However, I haven't tried starting systemsettings via sudo.

And, yes, I'm using SolydK.

Have the same issue can't change theme stuck with default SolydK.
Tried sudo systemsettings and change theme and still doesn't change for me.

Some config file to tweak? or change. As was able to change themes until recently.
Maybe latest update Apr. 2014?

Started looking around but scratching my head.
In etc/kde4/kdm the kdmrc file is showing.

Code: Select all

Theme=/usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/debian_dreams2_kdm
UseBackground=true
Which is the KDM theme I chose. So can't figure out why it's stuck with default SolydK?

I haven't tried to change KDM since the upgrade. If I could just get a free moment... :| maybe this week-end.

Hi vtpoet..

just to be sure..are you running SolidK32 or SolidK64? I'm running SolidK32 and I can change the KDM login theme without any issue.

Popped this up as still an issue for me. Still can't change themes in KDE standard KDM.
Always stuck with default SolydK greeter tho have others installed will not change theme.
