By default it is disabled.
If you want to enable the service you can edit the following file:

Code: Select all

~/.config/akonadi/akonadiserverrc
So that it reads:

Code: Select all

[QMYSQL]
StartServer=true

1. Akonadi tended to eat a lot of resources. I haven't checked that lately, but the way akonadi works I'd think that's still true.
2. There have been a lot of stability problems with akonadi in the past.
3. Akonadi stores a lot of (all?) user interaction in a database (like Zeitgeist does on Gnome). Security-wise this is a "single point of failure" you wouldn't want to have.
4. Generally, services that are not needed should not run.

Starting the service for everybody just in case someone wants to switch from T'bird to Kmail or Kontact is not a good idea.
