Black Screen after installing SolydKEE 10

Postby tavies678 » 11 Oct 2017 04:39

Hello,

My PC is multiboot with win 7, SolydK 9 and other Linux distros. It has GeForce 9600GT as video card.

Today I had to install SolydK EE 10 64-bit twice, choosing safe mode as method of installation. After reboot, the screen stays black for a long time before showing a mostly black login screen with only user id and password boxes visible. After log in, the screen shows only a white mouse arrow on a black background. I did verify SHA256 of the iso before burning it onto the DVD.

Any suggestions? Thanks a lot for your help.

I posted this thread in the wrong area of the Forums. Could you please put it in "Installation"?

Thanks a lot for your help.

I don't know about the safe mode. do we have that?

btw, I'm quite sure it's a graphic card issue. as a start you could add "nomodeset" into your boot option. it usually works for nvidia card.

Hello,

The second row on the installation menu is using safe mode which puts the following kernel boot options in Grub menu:

Code: Select all

noapic noapm nodma nomce nolapic nomodeset nosmp nosplash vga=normal

I copied the above parameters from my working Solydk 9 boot parameters before attempting to install Solydkee 10 in the same multiboot machine.

I suspect nouveau is not loaded or being prevented from being loaded somehow.

Can you get into the console with ctrl-alt-f1?

Yes. See Item #5 below.

1. Added acpi=off and vga=normal as kernel boot options to Grub menu

2. F10 to boot

3. Saw black screen with userid and password boxes. Noticed that only xserver-xorg session is available, but not plasma-desktop.

4. Signed in anyway.

5. CTRL ALT F1 to log in konsole

6.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop

7. Screen shows error: " Unable to fetch some archives".

8.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

9. Screen shows errors: "Could not resolve deb.debian.org. Could not resolve repository.solydxk.com"

Note that during installation, I was able to establish a wireless connection. My router is set up for IPv4 connections.

It would be good to have some information about the installed system. On the console type

Code: Select all

inxi -FNzxx >\inxi.txt

Boot into the live system (which works ok, I asume?) or another of your systems, open the file and post the output.

I also followed the tutorial by ScottQuier dated 13 Feb 2014:

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2908

However, in the end I got the following errors:

Code: Select all

E: Failed to fetch http://deb.debian.org/..../nvidia-detect_375.82-4-amd64.  Could not resolve deb.debian.org

In other words, still white cursor arrow on black screen!

There's no sense in trying to install anything if you don't have a working network connection. Try to ping some well-known server from the console, like google 8.8.8.8. Depending on the result, check your router, your wifi or cable. If the other systems on the same machine have internet using the same cable/wifi/router connection you'll need to troubleshoot the network installation but I'm not good at that, sorry.

Hello ilu,

Tried instaling once more. Before starting, I right-clicked the Network Manager icon in order to precisely set up the wireless connection, with the intent to purposely ignore IPv6. When the installation is completed and after reboot, I got the same black screen.

Code: Select all

 lspci -nnk

gives:

Code: Select all

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation G96 [GeForce 9500 GT] [10de:0640] (rev a1)
        Subsystem: eVga.com. Corp. G96 [GeForce 9500 GT] [3842:c958]
        Kernel modules: nouveau

02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Qualcomm Atheros AR93xx Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0030] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Qualcomm Atheros AR93xx Wireless Network Adapter [168c:3112]
        Kernel driver in use: ath9k
        Kernel modules: ath9k, wl

Note that in Solydk 9 which boots perfectly in the same PC, the above command gives only 1 kernel module: ath9k. I don't know why Broadcom's proprietary module wl gets in.

Next, I booted into rescue mode in order to examine system log:

Code: Select all

#journalctl -xb

Lines 1030-1076 show a hint of where the problem may lie:

Code: Select all

wl: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel
wl: module license "MIXED/Proprietary" taints kernel

Now that I know wl taints the kernel, resulting in the system being unable to connect to the appropriate repositories, and the black screen, what should I be doing next?

Thanks in advance for your help.

This needs either grizzlers or kurotsugis attention cause they are the most knowledgable people regarding buster. i hope one of them has time to have a look.

you can blaclist the kernel module to avoid it being loaded at boot.

Update:

I installed Debian Stretch 9.2 Gnome 64 bit non-free version in the place of SolydK EE10. Am quite happy with it.
