SolydX 9 64 201707 - grub problem and wrong screen resolution

Postby blessendor » 24 Nov 2017 09:35

I have problem with GRUB after fresh installed SolydXK, so I booted in safe mode from USB and fixed GRUB.

Code: Select all

solydxk@solydxk:~$ sudo -s
root@solydxk:/home/solydxk# mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
root@solydxk:/home/solydxk# mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
root@solydxk:/home/solydxk# mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
root@solydxk:/home/solydxk# mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
root@solydxk:/home/solydxk# chroot /mnt
root@solydxk:/# grub-mkdevicemap
root@solydxk:/# grub-install /dev/sda

root@solydxk:/# grub-install --recheck /dev/sda

root@solydxk:/# update-grub

root@solydxk:/#

It was really hard to fix and I don't know why grub-update trying to do something with second drive (/dev/sdb1 - USB).
In normal mode booting from USB - my laptop disk was /dev/sdb and USB - /dev/sda - and I got fail to fix grub settings in this mode - don't know why (it is not my first time to administration linux).

BTW, I have now wrong screen resolution - 1024x768 and can't change it.

Laptop HP Compaq 2710p
1280 x 800 WXGA 16:10

Display Server: X.org 1.19.2 drivers: vesa (unloaded: modesetting, fbdev)
tty size: 80x24 Advanced Data: N/A for root

Fixed by reinstalling grub.

Problem was in 'nomodeset' (removed) and 'vga=normal' (removed) arguments in generated kernel string (during setup grub in safe mode).

UPD: and failed on the next reboot:

error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue>

Goodbye SolydX(

Same fail boot after Manjaro Linux setup with Xfce desktop.

Recently was installed ZorinOS 12.2 and I did not have such problems.

Solving found here:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/question ... 175502753/

If you're in the mood, on that kit I'd look at a separate /boot at the begiining of the disk. One gig should be plenty - will allow more flexibility later.

It resolved my problem - creating separate /boot partition beginning of the HDD.
