[SOLVED] SolydX 201807 install broke grub

Postby sxphild » 28 Oct 2018 02:08

Running on a Dell 1525 core2duo with 4G ram.

I've been happily using SolydX 201701 for several years.
I decided to try out the 201807 release on a separate partition.
Also on that disk are Windows 7 and Puppy Linux.

During the installation process, I specified *not* to
install Grub ( I wanted to keep the grub from 201701 ).

This was obviously a mistake. now every time I boot, it
goes straight to the 201807 - no grub menu.
I tried holding down <shift> to get the menu to show,
but of course it doesn't work since I didn't have it installed.

What to do? I have lost access to the other O/Ss, which is not at
all good since this is my work computer.

I thought of a number of options...but i am
a bit new to Linux, and don't want to make things worse...

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Phil

For anybody who doesn't know how to do that. Here follows a short description of the steps to take to restore boot with a SolydXK live session:

Mount root partition:

Code: Select all

$ live-chroot /dev/sda2
In chroot: compare mounted partitions in fstab and blkid to get /boot partition(s)

Code: Select all

# cat /etc/fstab
# sudo blkid
In my case I have a separate /boot and /boot/efi partition:

Code: Select all

# mount /dev/sda4 /boot
# mount /dev/sda1 /boot/efi
Install Grub2:

Code: Select all

# grub-install /dev/sda
Ignore the "GUID Partition Table Header signature" errors. You're in a chrooted session. The last line matters, though: "Installation finished. No error reported."

Update Grub2:

Code: Select all

# update-grub
Unmount /boot partition(s) and exit.

Code: Select all

# umount /boot/efi /boot
# exit
Now, reboot and cross your fingers.

Guys!

Thanks to you both. The issue is resolved,
and the GRUB menu shows again.

That tip was excellent.
It will serve so that other users can solve the same problem.
It would be nice if you could put the topic as Solved.

I see that the word "solved" appears in the title so I assume someone put it there.

How exactly do you mark a topic as "solved"?
I am kind of a newbie at this..

Thanks

You edit your opening post and put "[SOLVED]" at the start of the subject line.
