SolydK on Alienware m15 R2

Postby iridesce » 05 Mar 2020 07:40

Greetings,

Hope you are enjoying the march to Spring. Thanks for sharing the time here.

I was gifted with this laptop and, while it did load SolydK 10 live, when it went to install SolydK 10, it ( gparted? ) could only find the installation thumb drive and not the laptop hard drive.

The wireless also didn't work with SolydK 10 live, though with some online guides, it looks to be possible. First though, I do need to install SolydK 10 on the laptop harddrive.

I don't even know where to start as every computer I've ever tried to install SolydK on has done so magnificently.

Any ideas, inquiries, and/or illuminations would be appreciated.

I am worried that the parted library returns paths like "/dev/sda-1".

Is it possible to start GParted from the start menu?

Thanks for your ongoing attention.

GParted via menu comes up with the same

If even GParted has problems there is not much I can do.

However, I uploaded a new live installer in the solydxk-10 testing repository in which I change paths returned by parted from something like /dev/sda-1 to /dev/sda1.

You can try that, but as I have no means to test this I cannot guarantee it will work. It might even make things worse. So, it is up to you if you want to try that.

In the live session you can add 'testing' at the end of the solydxk-10 repository line of /etc/apt/sources.list and run:

Code: Select all

apt update
apt install live-installer-3
Or directly download the deb:

I'm wondering why fdisk sees only 2 disks with 30GB called "USB disk 3.0". This looks like two 32GB pen drives. The laptop is supposed to have 2 drives with 1 TB each. They don't show up.

Code: Select all

Storage
Your computer supports one of the following configurations:
• One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive
• Two M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drives
• One M.2 2230 and one M.2 2280 solid-state drives
The primary drive of your computer varies with the storage configuration. For computers with a M.2 drive, the M.2 drive is the
primary drive

Thanks for your ideas

I did download the installer-3 and will attempt it later

It is two 32 GB pen drives. One is for the live version. The second one was for copying the konsole output requested. For whatever reason, I couldn't write to the install pen drive.

I'm pretty sure it only has one 1 TB hard drive. It not showing up is the first solution to be found.

Greetings from the Pacific Northwest

Fortunately communicating virtually carries no threat of viral exposure ... hope all are safe and warm there.

Below and attached are the results of attempting installation using the live-installer-3_2020. The deb installed fine and then ...

Moved your live-installer-3 post to this topic as it is very specific to your situation.

Unfortunately, the error is due to the fact that parted is not able to get any information on your HD. I am not able to fix that. So, I'm afraid that you are not going to be able to install SolydXK on your system until that is fixed upstream.

You could try one of the EEs, but I do not know if that solves your issue: https://downloads.solydxk.com/ce/testing/

I will remove the live-installer-3 package from testing.

Yep, we can't fix this if the disk ist not recognised. But the installer error should be caught, if possible.

My approach is to solicit help and persevere ..

Thank you for this wonderful flavour

After reading some more I'm sure it's a BIOS problem.
This https://www.dell.com/community/Linux-Ge ... 601#M22391 makes me think that the SSD might be running in raid mode. Disable intel raid in bios and switch to AHCI. They are talking about Ubuntu but it doesn't matter which Linux distro you use, you just need to force the drive to show up in fdisk and parted.

Another guide https://medium.com/@FloodSung/tutorial- ... cd1dc7eb3c also stresses the raid issue for your model.

If you manage to make the drive show up also look at this thread: https://www.dell.com/community/Linux-Ge ... -p/6241916

If all else fails you could also browse through this mega-thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads ... ge.770311/. But 'm confident it's some raid mode.

Thanks ilu,

That was the ticket, I did switch to ahci and that worked ... onward to getting the wireless to work with the previously mentioned process.

Also, when I switched to ahci, I lost access to the Windows 10 installation. I imagined that like grub, I I could assign boot sequences of the possible partitions with uefi but my searching hasn't turned up the solution. I realize that the answer should be apparent and yet ...

Any links or assistance would be appreciated.

Be well and keep washing your hands

I don't know much about those raid modes but I think you need to switch the Win installation to AHCI. No idea how to do that. I remember having seen Win raid drivers ...

Thanks @kurotsugi that may be my way home.

Like all of you, last month caught me by surprise and since then have been devoting time and resources to support and solutions in our local communities.

So, this dropped on the priority list as the laptop is a test one.

I did switch to AHCI in the bios and lost the Windows .... and was able to install SolydK, so a win in my book. Still, have to get the wireless working - hopefully the Killer solution.

@kurotsugi's link ends with being able to boot windows from safe mode even though the storage mode has been changed - next on the list.

I truly appreciate your assistance on this adventure.

Please stay safe and be well !!!
