ISO's 201308 - progress (or not)

Postby Arjen Balfoort » 08 Aug 2013 08:37

Since the release of UP 201308, I've been working on the new iso's.

With this topic I'd like to show you what is involved in creating the new iso's.
This topic is not about how to create an iso, but more a technical stroll through error wonderland.
I'll update this OP while my wandering progresses, and perhaps you might be able to shed a light on some of these issues.

Here we go!

It looks like shutdown problem is also connected with intel-microcode package

Unfortunately, installing the latest intel-microthingy doesn't change a thing.

I added a umount error to the OP, but that one can also be ignored.

After installation, boot and shutdown are okay.
Only these lines remain at boot, just before Plymouth takes over:
tsc: Fast TSC calibration failed
Failed to access perfctr msr (MSR c0010004 is 0)
Loading, please wait...
modprobe: can't load module microcode (kernel/arch/x86/kernel/microcode.ko): No such device

Fast TSC calibration failed
I googled the Fast Time Stamp Counter error.
http://penguintengil.wordpress.com/2012 ... fedora-16/ the best answer I found.

I see that frequently on lots of distro's and ignore it.
First it isn't really an issue as the kernel is only letting you know that the Its first try to set TSC failed. It just resorts to another method.
from Arch forum.

But it is nice if the error is gone. I keep trying to fix things that aren't really broken, until they are broken.

I've uploaded the first iso's for you to try: http://downloads.solydxk.nl/dev/

Only running live will cause shutdown problems, especially the 32-bit versions.

DL'ing the X32 version to install on my tryout partition.

Anything in particular to run or check?
Aside from any obvious problems installing,
booting, etc.

I downloaded the SolydK 32 bit iso and ran into a few issues:

Upon booting the live session from DVD it would not boot to the desktop. After the graphical progress indicators it fell back to command line prompt. There was an error regarding Plymouth.

I restarted and this time went to the boot menu and selected to start without Plymouth. It went through the normal Debian text screens and still ended at command prompt. This time I was able to get to the desktop using "startx".

On the desktop everything seemed OK except for Dolphin. I could not access the other partitions on my HDD. Received a permissions error.

= = = = = = = = = = = = =

I then downloaded the SolydK 64 bit iso and burned it to DVD.

This one booted correctly to the desktop with no issues whatsoever.

Using Dolphin I had no problem accessing my partitions on the HDD.

I went through System Settings and made all the various tweaks I do to a KDE desktop (themes, screen locker, power settings, etc.). No issues at all.

The only bug I found was one that has been there for a while. When you change the desktop background the first try goes to black screen. Redoing it the new wallpaper sticks.

I'm going to install this one to metal and see how it goes. I don't really expect any problems on this 64 bit version.

I really have no clue why what's causing the 32-bit versions to have these issues.
I wonder if it has something to do with the kernel.

Ref SolydX32-201308

I did run the live version with no apparent problem.
[Nope. It was the 201306 version that ran. Sorry for the misinformation.]

SolydX32-201308 didn't get to the login.
Going to try a rewrite on the USB, to be sure.

Browsed a while before trying to install.
Even checked the forum.
But install didn't progress as noted above.
If you run the installer from terminal, you'll see more information:

Code: Select all

gksu live-installer

Just finished the full installation and setup of SolydK 64 bit. The installation went smoothly. Upon reboot the DVD ejected but hitting "Enter" to reboot failed. Had to do a hard shutdown. Otherwise everything works superbly with no noticeable bugs. Additionally, suspend and resume seem to be working well. ;)

Great zerozero. It may just be that the 32 bit acts up with certain hardware.

Schoelje
found a package database discrepancy
in K32bit-201308 i couldn't locate kde-style-bespin (was trying to debug why on my main install bespin would systematically crash kwin)
but it's here (my main system 64bit)

Code: Select all

zerozero@home ~ $ apt policy kde-style-bespin
kde-style-bespin:
  Installed: 0.r1552-1+b0~pre1.1+b2
  Candidate: 0.r1552-1+b0~pre1.1+b2
  Version table:
 *** 0.r1552-1+b0~pre1.1+b2 0
        700 http://packages.solydxk.com/ solydxk/kdenext amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     0.r1552-1 0
        500 http://debian.solydxk.com/testing/ testing/main amd64 Packages
the question is not so much this package in particular but if this happens with others
bliss of ignorance
